Strong starting pitching did it again for the Binghamton Mets (10-9) as they won their fifth consecutive game 4-1 on Friday night over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Rainy Lara tossed seven inning of one hit ball – his only mistake a Rowdy Tellez’s solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. Lara was perfect through the first three innings, walked the lead-off batter to open the fourth, but erased the runner via a line drive double play. Lara struck out three and walked two in the outing.
Beck Wheeler threw two scoreless frames, fanning three to earn his second save of the season. Both Wheeler and Lara combined on the two-hitter.
For the second game in a row, Binghamton scored early, a Dominic Smith first inning home run plating the games first two runs. Niuman Garcia’s two-out single set the table for the Smith blast. Garcia figured in the B-Mets third run of the game, his two out single in the third scoring Jared King.
A Maikis De La Cruz one out double followed later in the inning by a Matt Oberste single contributed the final Binghamton run.
Binghamton amassed nine hits in the contest with De La Cruz, Garcia and Oberste each collecting two hit games. Smith’s two-run shot gives him 16 RBI’s in the young season tied for third best in the Eastern League.
Binghamton’s starting pitchers have gone 22.1 innings in the last three games allowing just three earned runs. Mickey Jannis will get the start tomorrow night as the B-Mets attempt to push their win streak to six games.
