Mets Minors Recap: Manaea Rebounds in Syracuse

Sean Manaea pitched exceptionally on Friday as he prepares to re-enter the Mets rotation by early July. The Samoan left-hander struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings of work and retired the last 15 batters he faced. Manaea will look to stabilize a Mets rotation that’s been battered by injuries to Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill.

Syracuse Mets (30-43) 0, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (45-27) 5

Box Score

Syracuse failed to generate much offense in Game 1, with the only spark coming from Yonny Hernández and Drew Gilbert, who hit their sixth and eleventh doubles, respectively. Gilbert has been finding his swing at the plate as of late and is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak.

Colin Poche tossed two perfect innings out of the bullpen and could be an option in Queens with the Mets in need of left-handed relief help.

Mark Vientos hit a game-tying three-run double in the fourth, and Travis Jankowski put the game away with a seventh-inning grand slam. Vientos could return to the Mets lineup by Monday.

Brandon Sproat continues to struggle as the 24-year-old surrendered a three-run homer in his only inning of work Friday. The top prospect’s ERA has now ballooned to 5.68 through June.

Double-A

Jett Williams continued his tear after recently earning Eastern League Player of the Week, as he has increased his OPS to a fantastic .923 and hit a double. Binghamton’s offense struggled to gain momentum, managing just a pair of run-scoring singles from Wyatt Young and Nick Morabito in a 9-3 loss to the Senators.

• RHP Alex Carrillo  2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 K (4.19 ERA)

Joander Suarez struggled mightily Friday as he gave up six earned runs. Alex Carillo tossed two scoreless innings on the bright side and has only allowed one run in June.

High A

Ronald Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, continuing his strong season with a .904 OPS. High ceiling prospect Jesus Baez added power to the lineup, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

Joel Díaz was magnificent Friday, as he tossed five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. Díaz has 10 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched this month and has only allowed three earned runs.

Low-A

Onix Vega had a huge first game in St Lucie, going 3-f0r-4 with two RBIs and a double. Yonatan Henriquez has been scorching hot in June and hasn’t had a hitless performance since June 5th.

• RHP Cristofer Gomez 2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K (3.55 ERA)

Cristofer Gomez was rock solid out of the pen as he struck out three in two shutout innings of work. Channing Austin didn’t have his best stuff Friday, allowing four earned runs over four innings for his first mediocre outing since May 17th. However, he did manage to strike out five in the process.

Rookie Ball Florida Complex League

FCL’s offense was silent today, but Bohan Adderley and Randy Guzman had four of the six hits teamwide Friday. Adderley stole his fifth base of the season.

Jonathan Jimenez delivered four stellar innings on the mound, racking up six strikeouts in a dominant performance. The outing marked his first scoreless appearance since May 16th.

Randy Guzman continued his solid day at the plate, going 1-for-1 with two walks. Jeffery Rosa also tallied a hit with two walks, but FCL’s offense was once again unable to take advantage of run-scoring opportunities.
