The Syracuse Mets’ offense was quieted Tuesday night by Worcester Red Sox right-hander Kyle Barraclough. The 33-year-old was dominant as he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out ten Mets in six innings.

After the first two batters were retired in the sixth, Rafael Ortega worked a two-out walk against Barraclough. Ronny Mauricio followed and launched a two-run bomb to break up the no-hitter and cut the deficit to 4-2. Mauricio is trying to turn things around after hitting just .202/.260/.360 in June. The 22-year-old infielder is 4-for-9 with one homer and four RBIs in his last two games, and leads the International League in hits with 96. Mauricio started for the tenth time in left field last night.

Heading into the eighth trailing 8-2, Mark Vientos clobbered a three-run homer with two outs. The home run was Vientos’s 16th of the year, tied for ninth in the International League.

Luke Voit was the only other Syracuse hitter to manage a hit last night. Voit belted a leadoff double in the seventh. The 32-year-old carries a .220 average with five homers, 14 RBIs, and a 1.032 OPS in 16 games for Syracuse.

The Red Sox jumped all over starter Tylor Megill in the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Megill yielded four runs on seven hits, three walks and fanned three batters. Since his demotion from the majors, the 27-year-old has pitched poorly in his two starts for Syracuse, posting an 0-2 record with an 8.38 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP. Megill has allowed 13 hits and six walks in 9 2/3 innings.

DOUBLE-A

Portland Sea Dogs (46-30) 7, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (37-38) 3

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies stumbled out the gate and could not erase a six-run deficit as they fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 7-3 Tuesday evening. Binghamton went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 on base.

The only fourth-of-July fireworks on the night for Binghamton came from the bat of Rowdey Jordan. In the fifth inning, trailing 6-0, Jordan walloped a three-run homer. The 24-year-old outfielder had a monster game going 3-for-3 with a double, walk, and hit by a pitch. In 22 games in June, Jordan slashed .306/.410/.541 with five homers, 14 RBIs, and a .951 OPS.

Branden Fryman extended his hit streak to 10 games. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. The 25-year-old shortstop is hitting 13-for-35 (.371) with three RBIs during that span.

Right-hander Christian Scott had his first rough outing of the season. Portland knocked around Scott in the second and third innings, serving up a three-run blast in the second and a two-run jack in the third. Scott settled down after the rocky start and pitched the final three scoreless frames. The 24-year-old allowed six runs on eight hits, walked a pair, and struck out five in six innings.  On the season, in 11 starts, Scott has posted a 4-2 record, 2.98 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and a 58/10 K/BB ratio across 51 1/3 innings.

24-year-old Sammy Tavarez returned to action after over a month’s absence. The 6-foot-7 right-hander pitched in relief and notched a pair of strikeouts in one inning. Tavarez owns a 3.18 ERA with 25 punchouts in 17 innings over 12 appearances.

HIGH-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (35-40) 6, Wilmington Blue Rocks (33-41) 4

The Brooklyn Cyclones mounted a late-inning comeback to beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 6-4 Tuesday evening.

Brooklyn finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning but missed a great opportunity to score additional runs. With three consecutive singles to start the inning to load the bases, Alex Ramírez came to bat and grounded out into a fielder’s choice to bring the lone run out of the frame. The 20-year outfielder went 0-for-5 with an RBI from the lead-off spot. He is hitting .238 with five homers, 34 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.

Infielder Mateo Gil went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and a walk in the contest. Gil is 5-for-15 to begin July with three extra-base hits and a pair of walks.

Catcher Drake Osborn tacked on an insurance run for Brooklyn with an RBI base knock in the ninth. He collected three hits in the ball game. The 24-year-old backstop is hitting just .174/.227/.367 and a .594 OPS.

Jeffrey Colón yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits across six innings in a no-decision against Wilmington Tuesday night. The 23-year-old walked one and fanned three batters on the evening, throwing 60 of his 92 pitches for a strike. Colón carries a 1-4 record, a 5.93 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and a 50/22 K/BB ratio across 57 2/3 innings.

The duo of Quinn Brodey and Paul Gervase tossed three scoreless frames against Wilmington to secure the 6-4 win for Brooklyn. Lefty hurler Brodey pitched two innings, permitting one hit, a walk, and striking out a pair to pick up his first win. The 27-year-old owns a 2.95 ERA, with 29 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings.

Right-hander Gervase escaped some trouble in the ninth. After permitting back-to-back two-out walks, he struck out the game’s final batter to pick up his third save of the season. The 6-foot-10 right-hander has been terrific this year with a 1.07 ERA, holding batters to a .133 average, and an absurd 13.9 K/9.

 

LOW-A

Lakeland Flying Tigers (31-44) 6, St. Lucie Mets (27-47) 3

Second baseman Jefrey De Los Santos reached base three times Tuesday night. He delivered a 378-foot solo blast to left-center field to get the Mets on the board in the fourth inning. It was his third home run of the year. The 20-year-old also added a pair of singles. Despite his solid outing Tuesday, De Los Santos is hitting a paltry .182/.291/.318 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 104 plate appearances for St. Lucie.

The Mets were trailing 6-1 in the eighth inning when Jett Williams drilled a lead-off double. Two batters later, on the frist pitch, Vincent Perozo swatted a two-run dinger to pull the Mets within two. It was Perozo’s lone hit of the contest. The 20-year-old has five homers, 22 RBIs, and a .735 OPS in 171 at-bats.

Jett Williams finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and stole his 23rd base. The 19-year-old teenager is hitting just .236 but leads the Florida State League with a .416 OBP, is second in walks (51), and is tied for sixth with 23 stolen bases.

Dyron Campos went 1-for-4 with a base knock and swiped a bag in the sixth inning. He is 6-for-19 (.316) with two homers, seven RBIs, and a pair of stolen bases in his last six games. Campos split time between the DSL and the FCL last year. The 22-year-old outfielder is older for the league but still displayed great advanced stats with an ISO of .209, .803 OPS, 111 wRC+, and excellent speed. Those numbers placed him in the top ten among all Mets minor leaguers last year.

Right-hander Layonell Ovalles was knocked out in the fifth inning by the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The 20-year-old hurler surrendered five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings of work. Ovalles was coming off a strong June. In five appearances (four starts), he went 1-0 with a 1.77 ERA, 0.74 ERA, and a 23/2 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings.

FLORIDA COMPLEX LEAGUE

FCL Astros (8-11) 5, FCL Mets (10-8) 4

The FCL Mets and the FCL Astros played a doubleheader on July 4th. Game one was a resumption from last Friday, June 30th, suspended in the bottom of the third inning.

Leadoff hitter Nick Morabito had another great day at the plate. The 20-year-old recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Morabito also drew a walk and swiped a pair in the contest. The second-round pick from 2022 was struggling to a slash line of .196/ .354/.235 on June 24th. Since then he is 9-for-19 with two extra-base hits, seven RBIs, three walks, and four stolen bases in his last five games. Overall, he is hitting .271/.409/.343 and a .752 OPS.

Willy Fanas doubled and drove in a run Tuesday afternoon. The 19-year-old struck a two-out double down the right field line in the fourth inning to plate the Mets’ first run of the ball game. The young outfielder is looking to pick things up, as he had has had a disappointing season hitting a mere .209/.274/.373 with two homers, 13 RBIs, two steals, and a .647 OPS.

20-year-old Jonah Tong finally made his professional debut. The Mets selected the right-hander in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB from Georgia Premier Academy in Statesboro, Georgia. Tong faced four batters, permitted one run on two hits, and fanned a pair in 2/3 innings.

FCL Mets (13-8) 7, FCL Astros (8-13) 2

Left fielder Estarling Mercado collected his first pro hit. Mercado smacked a two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.

Third baseman Jacob Reimer on a rehab assignment with the FCL Mets, clubbed a two-run shot in the fifth inning, extending the Mets’ lead to 6-1. Reimer also drew a walk in the third and added a base knock in the sixth, finishing the contest 2-for-3.

Diego Mosquera scored the Mets’ first run of the ball game with a leadoff single in the fourth and came around to score on Fabian Machado‘s RBI groundout. The 19-year-old added another leadoff base knock in the fifth and scored on Reimer’s round-tripper. On the season, the middle infielder leads all Mets players and is tied for seventh in the Florida Complex League with 24 hits.

19-year-old Jose Gomez tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out four. The lone run was a one-out solo shot from Astros left fielder Daniel Familia. In his career, the right-hander owns a 3-0 record with a 3.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 28/15 K/BB ratio across 25 innings in 14 appearances (4 starts.)
