AAA: Buffalo Bisons (18-21) 9, Syracuse Mets (16-23) 3  Box Score

The Mets were held to just three runs on five hits in Sunday’s defeat. Three of those five hits went for extra bases, including Vientos’ 12th home run of the season, a two-run blast that got the Mets off to a strong start in the top half of the first inning. His 12 home runs tie him for second in the International League, while his 1.092 OPS ranks fourth in the league. Mauricio added two doubles of his own and now has 17 doubles for the season, a total which easily leads the league. His OPS is also in the top 10 in the league, while his strikeout rate is also a career-low 16.6%.

  • RHP David Griffin (L, 1-2, 4.56 ERA) 5.0 IP, 11 H, 6 ER, 4 K
  • RHP Eric Orze (1-1, 8.62 ERA) 2.0 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 K
  • RHP Bubby Rossman (1-3, 7.31 ERA) 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB

The Mets’ pitching staff imploded in this game, giving up nine runs on 16 hits. Griffin had been solid to begin the season, posting a 1.98 ERA through his first three appearances of the season with Syracuse, but had his worst appearance since he gave up seven runs in May 2022. The 11 hits he allowed were the most he has ever given up in a professional appearance. Orze’s struggles from last season have continued so far in 2023 as well and his struggles have been particularly pronounced so far in May: he has given up 7 earned runs over 4 1/3 innings pitched this month.

AA: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (14-18) 9, Hartford Yard Goats (17-15) 2  Box Score

  • Jose Peroza 3B: 2-for-5, 2B, RBI, 2 K, .307/.365/.600
  • Rowdey Jordan DH: 2-for-3, R, HR, 3 RBI, K, .193/.307/.349
  • Dariel Gomez 1B: 1-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, .203/.329/.305

The Rumble Ponies’ offense had a huge game across the board on Sunday, with every player in the lineup except for Luke Ritter recording at least one hit. They were especially productive with runners in scoring position, going 5-for-11 in those situations. Peroza had multiple hits for the third straight game. After a very rough April, Jordan is hitting .290/.400/.548 with more walks than strikeouts so far in May. After hitting 26 home runs last year, this was just Gomez’s first home run of the season.

Carrasco was making his second rehab appearance in his return from elbow inflammation. After going three innings in his last appearance, Carrasco went four shutout innings and threw 52 pitches in this one. Wilson has struck out just two batters in 6 2/3 innings of work this season. Acosta has not given up a run in 4 1/3 innings pitched so far in 2023.

A+: Wilmington Blue Rocks (17-15) 6, Brooklyn Cyclones (11-19) 5  Box Score

The Cyclones had just six hits in Sunday’s game and were a very poor 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Parada is hitting .300/.378/.550 so far in May. Gil has had just four hits in 31 at bats since joining the Cyclones, but three of those four hits have gone for extra bases. Top prospect Alex Ramirez was hitless in this game and has generally struggled so far in May: he is hitting just .205/.326/.231 for the month.

  • RHP Christian Scott (0-1, 9.00 ERA) 3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 4 K
  • LHP Quinn Brodey (0-0, 3.75 ERA) 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K
  • RHP Jace Beck (L, 1-2, 4.91 ERA) 2.0 IP, ER, 3 BB, 2 K

Scott had his second straight rough outing to begin his season with the Cyclones, although he has struck out seven batters while walking only one over five innings pitched. Brodey gave up multiple earned runs for the first time since converting to a pitcher this season but still managed to have an impressive strike out performance. There have been some growing pains in terms of walks and home runs against Brodey, but his 11.25 K/9 does show some potential in his new role. Beck is striking out 18.82 batters per nine innings this season but is also walking more than a batter per inning.

A: Daytona Tortugas (14-19) 2, St. Lucie Mets (8-25) 1  Box Score

The Mets had an abysmal performance offensively in Sunday’s game, as they had just four total hits and were hitless in 10 at bats with runners in scoring position. This kind of poor offense is not unusual for St. Lucie this season: their .649 OPS as a team ranks last in the Florida State League. Williams has walked 19 times in just 22 games so far this season.

Ramirez continued his impressive season with two perfect innings in an abbreviated start against Daytona. He has a 29:6 K:BB ratio in 29 2/3 innings pitched. Ventura had his best appearance of the season, tying his season high with five innings pitched while giving up no runs. After a dreadful April, Ventura has a 2.45 ERA so far in May.
