Las Vegas – Dominic Smith, LF

Smith’s future with the Mets organization grew murkier when not only did he lose his first base job in Triple-A to Peter Alonso, but Alonso responded with a big week. Well, Smith has risen to the challenge by not just hitting two homers, but also out-hitting Alonso.  It should be noted Smith is historically a second half hitter, and he may just be starting to heat up.  If so, he is really going to give the Mets a lot to think about when it comes to his and Alonso’s future with the organization.

Binghamton – Will Toffey, 3B

When the Mets acquired Toffey as part of the package for Jeurys Familia, the book on him seemed to be if you could unlock his power potential, this guy was going to be a terrific player. So far, in his time with Binghamton, we’ve seen that with him slugging .520 in seven games.  Part of that is his hitting two doubles over the past week.  Speaking of the past week, he is currently in the midst of a four game hitting streak which includes two multi-hit games with him hitting doubles in consecutive games.

St. Lucie – Michael Paez, 3B

In the first half of last year, Paez seemed to separate himself from a trio of middle infield picks from the 2016 draft.  He would be a South Atlantic League All Star in large part because he led the league in doubles. Since that time he has struggled, but this week, we have seen another glimpse of the bat with so much power potential.

Paez now has a 10 game hitting streak, which has seen him hit .366/.386/.610 with two doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBI.  In the Month of July, he’s hitting .280/.370/.495.  Seeing him get back to his form from the first half of last year, it’s possible Paez has rediscovered something.  Certainly, this gives us reason to follow him closely the rest of the year.

Columbia – Tony Dibrell, RHP

In his only start of the week, Dibrell pitched six scoreless against the team with the most hits in the South Atlantic League.  What makes this start truly impressive for Dibrell is the fact he walked just one batter in those six innings.  This is a sign of Dibrell getting much better control as the season progresses. In fact, over his past three starts, he has walked just two batters in 19 inning pitched.  Over his last seven starts, he has walked two or fewer batters. With his dominating stuff and ability to put batters away, increased control is a huge step forward in his development.

Brooklyn – Ross Adolph, OF

Age: 21

Like Dibrell, this is the second straight week Adolph was named as a Mets Minors Peak Performer. The reason being is Adolph is not just getting hits, but he’s also driving the ball somewhere while showing off his speed.  Currently. he has a five game hitting streak, and he has reached safely in 12 of his past 13 games.  With this stretch, the 12th round draft pick of this past year’s draft looks like an absolute steal.

Kingsport – Mark Vientos, 3B

Week Stats: .409/.480/.909, 2 2B, 3 HR, 11 RBI

Lost in a potent Kingsport offense has been last year’s second round draft pick, who had not yet shown off his true power potential.  Well, that changed this past week with Vientos hitting three homers.  In this past week, he not only put up half of his season total of homers, he jumped into the top 10 in homers in the Appalachian League.  This could be an indication a very young and promising prospect is about to break out and being what many believe could be a quick ascent through the Mets minor league system.

Gulf Coast – Ronny Mauricio, SS

Age: 17
Season Stats: .333/.345/.529, 12 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 27 RBI, SB
Week Stats: .318/.318/.545, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI

While Mauricio continues to impress, it needs to be constantly repeated this is a teenager who is playing hundreds of miles away from home, and he is learning to adjust to life in the United States. While he’s making those adjustments, he’s first in the Gulf Coast League in total bases (73), second in doubles and tenth in slugging.  This is a special talent who is just scratching the surface.

Dominican Summer League – Felix Valerio, 2B

Age: 17

Valerio has been showing good plate discipline and contact ability. Remarkably, despite his being a teenager in his first ever professional experience, he has walked nine more times than he has struck out this season.
