Josh Satin is clearly the most worthy of getting a shot at first base if the team ultimately decides to demote Ike Davis. He must smell blood in the water, because he was 4-for-5 last night, with four RBI. He’s batting .316 this year with 8 home runs and 31 RBI. Satin also gets on base over 40% of the time.
He has earned a promotion at this point, especially with the way Davis has been playing. It’s time to bring Satin up, and start platooning him with Davis right now. This would be a wise decision for two reasons:
- You ease Satin into the big league picture, rather than throwing added pressure on the kid as being the savior at first base if the team does decide to demote Davis. Platooning Satin and Davis gives Satin some major league at bats before taking over the job permanently.
- You can light a fire under Davis’ backside. Putting an immediate threat behind a player, like a hungry prospect, can work wonders on a veteran’s performance. It can also give Davis some time off to work on his mechanical deficiencies if he is platooning. The Mets can rest him against left-handed pitchers until he gets his act together.
Sleeper Alert
After promoting Josh Satin, the team has to take a good look at moving Allan Dykstra to Triple-A. The left-handed hitting former first rounder has played himself back into the mix this season. Dykstra stroked another home run and added three RBI in last night’s loss to Altoona. He’s batting .307 with six homers and 31 RBI on the year. He leads Binghamton in batting average (.307), RBI (31), OBP (.449), OPS (.996), and is second on the team in home runs (6).
