Steven Matz made one mistake in the 1st inning when he gave up a double to Nate Freiman that scored Ryan Roberts for the only run of the game. Matz went 5 innings allowing four hits, two walks, while striking out just two which is his lowest total since he also K’ed two on May 6th. 2014. Matz was pulled after just 79 pitches (50) in an effort to keep his innings down. Matz suffered his 3rd loss of the season while lowering his ERA to 1.98 and the average against him to .202. John Church bounced back from his worst outing of the year (1 IP, 3 R) with two perfect innings striking out one. Zack Thornton pitched a perfect 8th inning extending his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings.

The 51’s offense was completely shutdown by Barry Zito who threw 8 shutout innings giving up just two hits. Jayce Boyd was the only Vegas hitter to reach base twice in the game going 1-2 with a walk. He is now 3-8 with two walks since being promoted to Las Vegas. Cory Vaughn collected the only other hit for the 51’s, he is hitting .213/.327/.337 on the year. Box Score

Las Vegas plays Nashville tonight at 8:05 ET with Tyler Pill (1-2, 7.04) on the hill hoping to snap the 51’s 5-game losing streak.

Binghamton (26-24) 5, Altoona 3

Binghamton were trailing 3-2 in the top of the 8th when Michael Conforto came to the plate with Yeixon Ruiz on third base as the tying run. Conforto proceeded to hit a RBI triple down the right field line to tie the game for his 1st AA hit and his first professional three bagger. Here is video of the triple. Conforto then scored the go-ahead run on an error by the shortstop by Gift Ngoepe off the bat of Eudy Pina. Conforto finished his 2nd B’Mets game going 1-3 with a walk while striking out once. Aderlin Rodriguez had a big day going 3-4 with two solo homeruns, one in the 2nd inning and another in the 7th. Over his last 10 games Rodriguez is 9-32 with three homeruns and eight RBI’s while striking out only four times. Gavin Cecchini went 2-4 making it his 4th straight multi-hit game and has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games.

Seth Lugo went 6 innings giving up three runs on five hits, two walks, while striking out four batters raising his ERA to 2.82 for the year. Matt Koch pitched a perfect 7th inning picking up the win and has thrown 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Vic Black pitched the 8th inning giving up a hit and a walk while striking out one in the scoreless frame. Paul Sewald came into the 9th pitching a clean inning with a strikeout, picking up his 9th save and lowered his ERA to 1.46. Box Score

Binghamton has the day off

St. Lucie (25-25) 10, Fort Myers 4

The St. Lucie offense came out of the gates on fire scoring 10 runs in the first three innings giving starter Miller Diaz plenty of wiggle room to work with. Dominic Smith continued his great stretch getting a hit in each of the first three innings stretching his hitting streak to 13 games. Smith finished 3-5 with his league leading 14th double, scored two runs, and knocked in four to give him 26 RBI’s on the year. On May 7th Smith’s slash line was .143/.194/.159 and now today he is hitting .260/.303/.377 for the year. Matt Oberste had a big day as well going 4-5 with two doubles, two RBI’s, and scored three runs while lifting his slash line to .279/.331/.436. He has hit .324 over his last 10 games driving in 9 in that span while walking five times compared to four strikeouts. Amed Rosario had his 4th straight multi-hit game going 2-5 with his league leading 4th triple, 6th stolen base, scoring a run, and collecting two RBI’s. Rosario had a monster may hitting .318/.370/.455 while hitting 11 extra base hits, walking 8 times (walked just once in April), and stealing three bases. Every hitter in the Mets lineup had atleast one hit with the league’s leading hitter Jeff McNeil going 1-4 with a walk.

Diaz was given a big lead to work worth and managed to pick up his 3rd win of the year but it wasn’t pretty as he walked five, hit a batter, threw two wild pitches in 6.1 innings. Diaz somehow managed to give up just four runs (three earned) partially because he gave up just three hits and that Kyle Regnault bailed him out in the 7th stranding two of his runners. Regnault pitched 2.1 innings giving up one hit, while walking two and striking out four hitters. Akeel Morris came in with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th inning to make sure the game didn’t get close. He induced a groundball out from Alex Swim to end the game. Box Score

Charleston 9, Savannah (24-26) 3

Corey Oswalt started the 5th inning with a 2-0 lead before he imploded giving up seven runs in a sloppy inning that included two errors and two wild pitches. Oswalt went 4.1 innings giving up the seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out four. Ben Griset relieved Oswalt letting the runner he inherited score and a run of his own in 1.2 innings while striking out two. Lefty Paul Paez pitched two innings giving up his first run of the season in 9.1 innings. David Roseboom pitched a clean 9th inning failing to record a strikeout for just the 2nd time this year.

Jon Leroux led the Sand Gnats offense reaching base three times, scoring a run and picking up his 4th double of the year. Patrick Biondi had two hits out of the lead off spot including his first 3B of the year. Joe Tuschak was playing in his 2nd consecutive game after being promoted and went 1-4 with a RBI triple. Luis Guillorme, Jean Rodriguez, Wuilmer Becerra, and Eudor Garcia all went 0-4 on the night as Savannah had only 6 hits. Box Score

Both of the DSL Mets had yesterday off but will be back in action today at 10:30 ET in the Dominican Republic.
