Las Vegas (32-29) 11, Reno 6

Steven Matz had his worst outing going just 4 innings giving up four runs on five hits (HR) and three walks while still managing to strike out six. Matz was in deep counts most of the night needing 83 (50 strikes) to make it through his shortest outing since August 18th, 2013. Matz big struggle was the 3rd inning when he gave up all four of his runs throwing 35 pitches with 11 being breaking balls and 7 changeups. Matz seemed like he was really working on his off-speed stuff throwing his changeup 18 times but only once in his easiest inning the 4th. In the 4th inning he was back to dominating striking out the side using primarily just his fastball that was hitting 94-95 MPH on the gun. I think he will get one more start in the Minors with Jon Niese having a good game  last night and the next start lining up to be against the best offense in baseball in the Blue Jays. Cody Satterwhite pitched two scoreless innings in relief, he has settled down after a rough start to the year and has allowed just three runs in his last 10 appearances. Chase Bradford blew a 5-4 lead in the top of the 8th giving up two runs but the offense bailed him out in the bottom of the inning scoring six runs and getting him his first win of the season.

The 51’s were trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the 8th before Aces pitcher Kevin Munson had a Rick Ankiel type breakdown walking four batters in a row including two with the bases loaded and uncorking a wild pitch to score a run. All said and done Munson walked five, hit one, gave up one hit allowing six runs while recording only one out. Wilfredo Tovar started the rally with a walk and capped it off with a 2-run single to give the Mets a 11-6 lead. Tovar reached base five times on the night 2-3 with three walks, three RBI’s, two runs scored, and stole two bases. Matt Reynolds was 2-6 with two runs scored, he is now hitting .375 with 9 RBI’s over his last 10 games. T.J. Rivera busted out of an 0-38 slump with three hits (2B)  and two RBI’s while playing 3rd base. Johnny Monell was 1-4 with a walk and a run scored extending his hitting streak to 8 games. Jayce Boyd went 1-4 with a walk, run scored, and his first AAA RBI. Box Score

Las Vegas plays tonight at 10:05 vs. Reno with Tyler Pill (2-3, 6.41) on the mound.

Binghamton (29-30) 6, Bowie 0

Luis Cessa had his third straight good start throwing 6 innings of shutout baseball allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out two. He gave up 1 hit after the first inning and retired 10 straight at one point. Cessa threw only 80 pitches (53 strikes) picking up up his 5th win and lowering his ERA to 2.51. Over his last three starts Cessa has thrown 19.2 innings giving up one run on twelve baserunners (10 hits, 2 walks) while striking out fifteen. Beck Wheeler pitched two scoreless innings in relief extending his streak to 11 shutout innings over his last 10 appearances.

Binghamton’s offense was facing rehabbing Major Leaguer Kevin Gausman who was hitting 96-97 on the gun with regularly, they seemed unfazed knocking him out after 3.1 innings with two homeruns. Aderlin Rodriguez (7th) and Josh Rodriguez (11th) each had a homerun off Gausman with Josh’s being a 3-run shot in the 4th inning that knocked Kevin out of the game. Michael Conforto was 1-3 with a walk and scoring two runs on the night, lowering his average to .378 in AA. L.J. Mazzilli was 0-3 with two walks and scored a run, now hitting .188 since his promotion. Gavin Cecchini was in the original lineup but was a late scratch after feeling “something” in BP in what the manager Pedro Lopez said was minor and nothing to worry about. Box Score

Michael Fulmer (1-0, 3.86) is pitching for the B’Mets tonight as they host New Britain at 6:35.

Daytona 6, St. Lucie (30-29) 5 F/8 Game One

The Mets bullpen coughed up what would have been a great come from behind win after the offense scored three in the last inning (7th because of DH) that was capped by Dominic Smith go-ahead single. Akeel Morris had the Tortugas down to their last out before giving up a game tying single by Phillip Ervin for his first blown save of the year. Robert Coles came into pitch the 8th inning giving up a lead off walk then a walk-off double by Sebastian Elizalde. John Gant started the game going 5.2 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits ( 2 HR’s) and one walk while striking out eleven hitters.

Dominic Smith was 2-4 with two RBI’s giving him 33 on the year which is good for 5th in the FSL, nine behind Elizalde for the league lead. Maikis De La Cruz was 1-4 with a 2-run single that tied the game in the top of the 7th. Amed Rosario had a rough game going 0-4 and is now hitting just .189 over his last 10 games. All-Star catcher Colton Paia was 1-2 with a walk. The Mets got some potentially bad news as Jeff McNeil had to leave the game in the bottom of the 1st inning after being hit on the hand by a pitch in the top of the inning. Box Score

Daytona 3, St. Lucie (30-30) 2 F/7 Game Two

Miller Diaz pitched a 6-inning complete game but was unable to hold a 2-1 lead heading into the 5th when he have up the eventual game-winning triple to Alex Blandino. Diaz allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven taking his 4th loss of the year. The best sign for Diaz was the one walk, it was his lowest total since his 2nd start of the year and snapped a two-game streak of walking five. In 55.1 innings Miller has allowed just 44 hits including 1 homerun but has issued 29 walks.

No one in the Mets lineup could come up with the clutch hit as they went 0-7 with runners in scoring position leaving seven runners on base. Yeixon Ruiz had three of the Mets five hits including his 3rd double and knocked in his 8th run of the year. Victor Cruzado was 1-3 and scored a run, he has now reached base safely in all five games since coming off the disabled list. Smith went 0-3 snapping his streak of reaching base in 22 consecutive games. He is now hitting .280/.320/.419 including .350/.381/.575 in the month of June. Rosario went 0-1 reaching base via walk and getting hit by a pitch, he seemed fine staying in to finish the game. Box Score

St. Lucie looks to go back over .500 with Logan Taylor (1-4, 4.58) getting the start against Palm Beach at 6:30

Savannah (33-27) 4, West Virginia 3

The Sand Gnats 8-game winning streak looked to be on the verge as they trailed 3-1 coming into the 9th inning before Jon Leroux tied the game with a 2-run homerun and Vicente Lupo won it with a sac fly. Lupo 2-3 raising his average off the interstate for the first time all year to .207. John Mora was 2-3 with his 6th triple (2nd in SAL), walk, run scored, and his 28th RBI of the year. Jonathan Johnson was 1-4 dropping his average to 3rd in the league at .325 but extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Eudor Garcia had a rare bad night going 0-4 while Wuilmer Becerra got the night off.

Martires Arias started and struggled with his command walking three, hitting one, throwing a wild pitch but still managed not to allow an earned run (two unearned) in his 4 innings of work. James Duff pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the year. All-Star David Roseboom pitched a perfect 9th with one strikeout to preserve the Sand Gnats 9th straight victory and his 6th save of the season. Box Score

The Sand Gnats go for their 10th straight win with reigning SAL pitcher of the week Scarlyn Reyes (5-4, 2.86) making the start.
