On Thursday, the New York Mets made the decision to ultimately fire manager Carlos Beltran before he could manage a single game for the team because of his involvement in baseball’s recent sign-stealing scandal. This leaves the question: who is going to be the next Mets manager? Luckily for the Mets, there are both solid internal and external candidates that could take over the managerial position.
Perez Staying With ESPN?
One of these candidates could be Eduardo Perez. Perez was the runner-up to Beltran during the Mets first managerial search. However, on Thursday night Perez spoke on ESPN about the Carlos Beltran situation and said that he had not heard anything from the Mets about the managerial position.
Perez also shared his thoughts on Beltran, “what I believe is because his name was on the commissioner’s statement that he had to step down and he knew it was the right thing.”
Despite this, BetOnline has Perez as the favorite to get the Mets gig.
Super Joe Wants to Return
According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, another one of these said candidates is former Met “Super” Joe McEwing, who played college basketball in New Jersey. McEwing, who was close with David Wright made it known to his acquaintances that returning and managing the Mets would be a dream for him.
McEwing was also a finalist for the managerial position when the Mets hired Mickey Callaway back in 2017.
Meulens Could Be Red Sox Option
Many have speculated Hensley Meulens to be a candidate for the position Mets managerial position given his extensive baseball background. But, the Red Sox could be interested bringing Meulens as they look to replace their own former manager that was fired due to involvment in Astros sign-stealing scandal. Boston fired Alex Cora on Tuesday.
As per BetOnline, the odds of Meulens taking over the Red Sox position is 7/2.
