With the Cleveland Indians season coming to a close on Wednesday night interest in their pitching coach Mickey Callaway is expected to pick up and the first team showing major interest is the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies have asked permission to interview Callaway according to Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com. The Indians minor league pitching coordinator Ruben Niebla has teams inquiring about his services too.
The 2017 Indians pitching staff led the majors with a 3.30 ERA, first time since 1954 that Cleveland had the best ERA in baseball. They also set a big league record with 1,614 strikeouts while issuing the fewest walks with 406 and allowing the fewest home runs with only 163.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Mets are also expected to show interest in Callaway as they search for their next manager. It was previously reported by Buster Olney that Callaway would make sense for the Mets as well.
Callaway, 42, was the interim head coach at Texas A&M International University and has been the Indians pitching coach for the past five seasons.
Kevin Long is slated to interview for the Mets managerial spot in the near future according to multiple reports. Alex Cora is also expected to be among the Mets first round of interviewees.
