One name has taken himself out of the Mets managerial search and that is former Detroit Tigers skipper Brad Ausmus.
According to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag, Ausmus declined to be interviewed for the open position, while former Met Alex Cora will interview Tuesday and former Met Joe McEwing Wednesday. Heyman adds that Robin Ventura hasn’t shown interest in the position.
Ausmus, 48, interviewed with the Red Sox on Monday and has spoken with the Mets at least once this offseason. Peter Gammons of ESPN reported last week that New York had serious interest in the former catcher, but felt he may take a year off from managing.
In four seasons as Tigers manager, he finished with a 314-332 overall record.
Mike Puma of the New York Post added that the Mets will interview Cleveland Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway Wednesday. Callaway has come up as a hot candidate for manager this offseason among several different teams including the rival Philadelphia Phillies as well. Callaway has spent the past five seasons as the Indians’ pitching coach.
Right now, it seems as though hitting coach Kevin Long is an early favorite for the position, having interviewed last week.
