MMO’s partnership with Out of the Park Baseball (OOTP) continues as our 16-team Mets Madness bracket is now down to just eight teams. The 1969 champs needed a full seven-game series to beat the 1997 Mets in round one. They face off against the 1988 Mets, who needed only five games to beat up the 2016 Mets in round one.

MMO commenter Michael Lloyd leads the 1969 Mets against the 1988 Mets, managed by newcomer Dilip Sridhar.

1969 Mets

The 1969 Mets struggled a bit offensively vs. the 1997 Mets. The surprising seven-game series tested the fortitude of the ’69 team. Victorious again after taking a decisive Game 7 behind Tom Seaver and Series MVP Cleon Jones in the first round of MMO’s Mets Madness.
Jones timely hitting, along with some ‘small ball’ by the ’69 team coupled with some stellar bullpen work from Nolan Ryan, Tug McGraw, Jim McAndrew, and Jack DiLauro in the series, propelled the ’69 team past the ’97 Mets. Cleon Jones was named Series MVP.

1988 Mets

In the first round of our Mets Madness tournament, the 1988 New York Mets knocked off the 2016 New York Mets in a blowout series, 4-1. The 1988 team outscored the 2016 by a whopping 35-11 ratio, thanks to nine home runs in the series.

Keith Hernandez was the MVP of the series one win. Hernandez hit .450/.467/.850 with two home runs and five RBIs in the series. Catcher Mackey Sasser went 7-for-15 with six RBIs in the series as an unsung hero.

Ojeda finished with a 2.55 ERA over 17 2/3 innings in his two starts, including a complete game in the clincher.
