James Wagner, David Waldstein, and Kevin Draper of the New York Times published a history of the Wilpon family this week.

In the piece, they report that the Mets have lost over $60 million in each of the past two seasons and that “they are at the limit of debt allowed by Major League rules.”

That reason and a rift being chronicled between Jeff Wilpon and his family appear to be the two biggest factors that have led to the Wilpons selling the team.

As was reported on Wednesday, the Wilpons intend to sell 80% of the Mets to billionaire and current minority owner of the team, Steve Cohen.

It is certainly worth reading as it talks about many of the specific instances in which the Wilpons meddled such as in the case of Kazuo Matsui and even the Jason Vargas trade this past summer while also detailing the financial issues the organization faced.
