The New York Mets (87-75) were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies (71-91) by a score of 5-2 at Citizens Bank Park Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season. If the San Francisco Giants can hang on to win in their game they will oppose the Mets this Wednesday.
Pitching:
Gabriel Ynoa ended up taking the mound for the Mets today in place of Noah Syndergaard as the Mets had already clinched home-field advantage in the wild-card game. Ynoa went 4.2 innings allowing one run while walking one and striking out two. Jerry Blevins came in recorded the final out in the fifth inning.
Josh Smoker came in for the Mets in the bottom of the sixth and pitched a scoreless inning.
Erik Goeddel came on for the Mets in the bottom of the seventh inning and did not pitch well. Andres Blanco started the Phillies off with a single. After an Aaron Altherr walk put two runners on, Cody Asche reached base on a fielding error by first baseman Lucas Duda. Andres Blanco was able to score on a throwing error also by Duda to tie the game 2-2. Goeddel then gave up yet another single to Cesar Hernandez to give the Phillies the lead 3-2.
Still with nobody out Josh Edgin came in and tried to clean up the mess. Edgin gave up a sacrifice fly to Jimmy Paredes that made the score 4-2. Edgin was then able to get Odubel Herrera to ground into a double play to finally get out of the inning.
Jim Henderson came on for the Mets in the eighth inning and gave up one run making the score 5-2.
Offense:
In the top of the sixth inning with two out, Matt Reynolds got something started for the Mets by hitting a double to left field. Alejandro De Aza followed with a single to bring home Reynolds and get the Mets on the board with their first run of the game.
In the top of the seventh inning, Kelly Johnson lead-off the inning with a single. After Michael Conforto struck out and Eric Campbell lined out, Kevin Plawecki crushed a double on a sharp line drive over center fielder Odubel Herrera’s head that scored Johnson and made the score 2-1.
Notes:
Yoenis Cespedes, Jose Reyes, T.J. Rivera, and both starting catchers all had the day off today. Fernando Salas, Addison Reed, and Jeurys Familia were also unavailable.
Ryan Howard played his last game for the Phillies and left the field to a thunderous standing ovation.
On Deck:
The Mets will host the National League wild card game this upcoming Wednesday night. Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA) will look to get the Mets to the NLDS against either the Giants or Cardinals .
