The same issues that have haunted the New York Mets in recent games resurfaced Sunday afternoon, as they dropped the series finale to the Milwaukee Brewers and were swept out of Milwaukee with a 7-6 loss. The defeat was their seventh straight, dropping them to just eight games over .500.

At one point, the Mets held a commanding 5-0 lead and looked poised to salvage the finale. Their offense struck early, with Francisco Lindor scoring on a Juan Soto RBI single in the first, followed by a Jeff McNeil run-scoring hit to make it 2-0. Brett Baty extended the lead in the second with a solo homer, Ronny Mauricio drove in Pete Alonso in the third, and Cedric Mullins capped the surge in the fourth with a solo shot.

But from there, the Brewers chipped away at a shaky Mets pitching staff. Sean Manaea failed to provide the needed length, lasting just four innings while giving up four runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts, including a home run, ending the day with a 4.33 ERA. Milwaukee’s bullpen, limited to Nick Mears and DL Hall, kept New York scoreless the rest of the way.

In relief, Reed Garrett yielded one run on one hit over an inning, while Brooks Raley tossed a clean frame. Tyler Rogers followed with a scoreless inning despite allowing two hits. Ryan Helsley faltered, blowing the save by giving up a run on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, and Edwin Díaz took the loss, surrendering the deciding run on a walk-off homer to Isaac Collins in the ninth. Overall, the bullpen was tagged for seven runs on 12 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Player of the Game: Juan Soto

Juan Soto went 2-for-4 with a run batted in with a walk, continuing his recent hot streak. Soto’s recent success hopefully can spark the Mets’ offense down the line for their playoff run.
