On the final day of the regular season, a meaningless final regular season game took a back seat to the big news of the day. That being the announcement that the Mets are parting way from manager Buck Showalter at year’s end. In Showalter’s final game of his Mets’ tenure, his team posted a performance that summarized the 2023 season perfectly. A 9-1 loss.

José Butto got the start for the Mets and one again turned in a decent outing. He went six innings allowing only two runs via five hits. He walked two and struck out four. Butto made nine appearances for the Mets this season, pitching to a modest 3.64 ERA. In all but two of his outings he allowed two runs or less.

Offensively it was almost non-existent for New York. The team only had two hits. The only run of the game came via a solo shot by Tim Locastro. The Mets were held hitless since the fourth inning.

Denyi Reyes and Anthony Kay closed out the loss for New York. Reyes allowed five runs and six hits over only 2 1/3 innings. Kay responded with allowing two run in 0 2/3 innings.

The most notable occurrence in the game was a very nice standing ovation for Showalter. After the season he brought the team last year, it was well deserved.

The Mets finish the season 74-87. This slots them in for the seventh-best odds in the draft lottery. The team will need some luck, and move up into the top six, to ensure their pick does not drop 10 spots.

Statistic of the Game: 175-148

Manager Buck Showalter ends his Mets’ managerial career with a 175-148 record. It was two polar opposite seasons, with the ending of season one foreshadowing what was to come this year.

In 2022, the franchise turned in one of the best regular seasons in franchise history. However, under Showalter’s reign the team exited the 2022 playoffs early then turned in one of the most disappointing seasons in team history.

Player of the Game: José Butto

Butto wasn’t special, but he gave the Mets a chance to win. He turned in his seventh outing of the season allowing two-or-fewer runs. Unfortunately, he was unable to get the win as the Mets’ bats faltered.

It will be interesting to see how the 25-year-old factors into the team’s plans next season.

On Deck

Sunday’s game was the last of the 2022 season for the Mets. Up next, the Mets will have an introductory press conference for new president of baseball operations, David Stearns. At this press conference, which is slated for Monday at noon, the team will also address the change of manager.
