Dan Graziano of the Star-Ledger is reporting that the Mets and Red Sox are currently negotiating a trade that will send catcher Brian Schneider to Boston.

He writes,

A person familiar with the discussions, who declined to be identified because he’s not authorized to speak publicly about them, confirmed that the Red Sox and the Mets were discussing a deal that would send catcher Brian Schneider to Boston.

According to this person, the Mets would only do the deal if they were sure they could get a catcher in another deal or free agency. The free-agent catching pool is weak, though the Mets have, during this off-season, expressed at least some tepid interest in guys like Jason Varitek and Pudge Rodriguez.

Graziano also mentions that the Mets could pursue another catcher via a second trade, particularly for Baltimore’s Ramon Hernandez who was once high on the Mets’ wish list.

Jon Heyman had mentioned not to long ago, that the Mets might be looking to upgrade at catcher and specifically mentioned the Giants’ Benji Molina as a possibility.

I don’t know what to make of Schneider, I like the guy and he seems to do a great job handling the pitchers, but he is such a dead out in our lineup.

What do some of you think?
