While speaking with the media following his 2-for-3 performance in Tuesday afternoon’s win, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor told the media that contract extension talks have begun with the team, though nothing serious has occurred.
“They started, but nothing serious. We’re just talking and we’ll see how everything goes. My agent’s in-charge of that, and that’s between the front office and my agent,” Lindor said.
Lindor reiterated his stance that if an extension is not reached by Opening Day, he will not be negotiating a contract during the season, and he will test free agency.
“I will go to free agency if something carries on during the season,” Lindor said. “That’s not fair for me and that’s not fair for the team. I have to give everything I’ve got into winning baseball games. So if it doesn’t happen in spring training, I’ll go to free agency.”
When asked about the most important fact in contract negotiations, Lindor said it’s his family’s happiness. The superstar shortstop said, “I want my family to be happy, I want my family to be safe. I knew they would be safe in Cleveland. I know they can be safe in New York. So we’ll see what happens.”
Lindor hit his first home run of the spring on Tuesday afternoon, through eight games he is hitting .227 with a .888 OPS and a trio of runs batted in. The 27-year old added that he has been enjoying his time with the organization, and is getting more and more comfortable everyday.
