Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal interviewed the fan behind the Mets Billboards, Gary Palumbo. His article included a statement by the New York Mets that read:

“We appreciate our fans’ passion and are looking forward to the 2015 season.”

Diamond writes:

“As of Wednesday, his campaign was about 70% funded. But, after a series of social-media posts by the popular Mets blog Mets Merized Online, Palumbo received more than $1,400 that night to cross the $5,000 threshold.”

“Ultimately, Palumbo knows that words on the side of the road probably won’t lead to any change in the Mets’ front office. But as far as he’s concerned, it’s worth a try. “If that were the case, I would have done this out of pocket five years ago,” he said. “It was to elevate the conversation.’”

Diamond is the first Mets beat reporter to weigh in on this, and you can expect more coverage in the coming days.

I do give the Mets a lot of credit for acknowledging this fan driven mission, something many thought they’d ignore, and like them we all look forward to the 2015 season. Let’s hope it’s a great one.
