The Mets have keyed in on Milwaukee Brewers general manager Matt Arnold.

Mike Puma of the NY Post is reporting that Arnold is the Mets’ top candidate for president of baseball operations and the Mets may have made him an offer.

Arnold has worked with the Brewers since 2015. He’s been the right-hand man to Brewers president David Stearns – who the Mets have been denied permission to interview for their own opening – as general manager since 2020. Unlike Stearns, the Brewers cannot deny the Mets permission to interview him because it would be a promotion.

Arnold joined Milwaukee as a vice president and assistant general manager in October 2015. In 2019 he was promoted to senior vice president and assistant general manager.

With Stearns and Arnold, the Brewers have reached the playoffs four straight seasons.

“I think it was just the right time,” Stearns said of Arnold’s promotion to general manager last season. “Matt is deserving of this. We are at a place with our organization where we felt this was the appropriate structure. And clearly, Matt has drawn meaningful interest from the rest of the industry for multiple years now, so this made a ton of sense for us to do.’

Prior to his time in Milwaukee, Arnold spent nine seasons in Tampa Bay where his roles included serving as the director of player personnel. He’s also worked for the Dodgers, Rangers, and Reds organizations.
