So there’s some good news and some bad news when it comes to two of the Mets’ position players on the injured list.

Let’s start with the bad news (sorry).

Outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who started a rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday night, felt pain in his hand in his final at-bat and will not play on Friday.

Nimmo has been dealing with a bone bruise in his left hand, suffered in the team’s May 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies. While the Mets tried waiting it out, and let Nimmo play the field as a defensive replacement, they ultimately placed him on the I.L., retroactive to May 3.

Although there was optimism that he could be activated soon, the Mets decided to send him to Syracuse to play in some rehab games before coming back to the big league roster.

Unfortunately, Nimmo’s latest setback means he will likely not return to the lineup for at least another week-or-two, depending on the severity. This is not great news for the Mets, but on the bright side, Kevin Pillar has filled in amicably in center field both offensively and defensively in Nimmo’s absence.

As for third baseman J.D. Davis, he resembles the good news, which was previously mentioned. Davis, who suffered a left hand sprain on May 1, the same night Nimmo went down, faced high velocity on Friday and felt good, according to manager Luis Rojas.

The Mets expect to be able to activate Davis over the weekend, which would be a big boost to this lineup.

Davis has already spent two stints on the I.L. so far this season with hand injuries, but was the Mets’ hottest hitter before his latest issue. With the return of Davis looming, this means Jonathan Villar will resume his role on the bench, where he has provided a spark all year.

Nimmo’s set back is a tough blow to the Mets, but getting Davis back should help this club, as they continue to ride some momentum on this current seven-game win streak.

As for ace Jacob deGrom, who is dealing with right-side tightness, Rojas says he has been playing catch on flat ground and has felt really good about his mechanics.

However, they have not yet set a date for him to throw his first bullpen session. The hope is, that deGrom will only have to miss one start, as he works his way back from the I.L.
