In Wednesday’s 7-3 Grapefruit League victory over the Cardinals, the Mets got scoreless performances from three of their best relievers who are vital to the team’s success in 2020.

Dellin Betances, Jeurys Familia, and Edwin Diaz each turned in a hitless inning after Jacob deGrom went the first four.

Betances, who was signed to a one-year deal with his track record of being a dominant setup man in mind, has been a little slow in the velocity department thus far this spring, and only reached as high as 91 mph in Wednesday’s outing. Still, he also has a history of building up his velocity as the season goes on, so it’s not too worrisome, and the improved results from Wednesday are certainly a step in the right direction.

Meanwhile, Familia is looking to bounce back from a miserable 2019 in which he struggled to a 5.70 ERA. A Familia bounceback would be big for this team, as we’ve seen how good he can be when he’s at his best such as when he served as one of the better closers in baseball for a two-year stretch. If he can return to even a fraction of that, he could help get this bullpen back on the right track.

Possibly the biggest enigma in this bullpen is Diaz, who has easily the highest upside among the Mets’ relief corps. Diaz threw a hitless inning on Wednesday as well, flashing his fastball up to 99 mph. After a wildly inconsistent 2019 campaign that followed a historic 2018 season, Diaz is as much of a question mark as anybody, but a return to from from him would be huge for a Mets bullpen that struggled so much last year.

“Last year, we’re leaving that in the past,” Diaz said. “There was a lot that we learned from the good and the bad, but I think what we showed today, if we can pitch the way that we did, we had three clean innings, I think if we’re able to do that on a consistent basis, I think we’re going to be one of the best bullpens in the league.”

It’s certainly a bold statement from Diaz, but not an unattainable one. If all the pieces fit together and everything clicks, the potential from this bullpen is unlimited. There are certainly some wild cards, and the trio of Diaz, Betances, and Familia is likely going to make or break the late-inning pitching staff and ultimately, the fate of the entire Mets’ season.

It will certainly be interesting to watch how these pitchers progress going forward and into the start of the regular season.
