The New York Mets are hiring John Gibbons to be their bench coach according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. The former Toronto Blue Jays manager will join a coaching staff led by new Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.

Gibbons went 793-789 in 11 seasons (two separate stints) as the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays with his last season coming in 2018. Gibbons also has 53 ejections during his managerial career.

The 61-year-old was a first round pick of the Mets in the 1980 draft. He played in 18 big league games for the Mets, including eight games for the 1986 World Series champs.

Current Mets coaching staff:

Andy Martino of SNY reports that long-time Cleveland Guardians’ third base/infielders coach Mike Sarbaugh will be the Mets third base coach for 2024.

Martino also reports that Glenn Sherlock will return as the catching coach.

Anthony DiComo of MLB adds that Antoan Richardson, formerly of the San Francisco Giants coaching staff, will be the Mets first base coach.
