mets win marlins

What an incredible and exhilarating two weeks it’s been to be a Mets fan. Here we are only 14 games in and our Mets are on top of the world boasting an MLB best 11-3 record.

It is their best start since their 1986 World Series championship season. (Wait, what!) And Iheir eight straight home wins to start the season is the best in team history.

A week ago, when I wrote “You bet your ass I believe in this team” there were many who thought I was being too incredulous and unrealistic. Are you ready to take the plunge, now?

These Mets are for real whether you believe in them or not. I’m taking particular joy in hitting up the talking heads who had nothing but disparaging things to say about the Mets this offseason.

All those so-called experts who gave the Mets a “Fail” for their offseason moves. All those suits who said the Mets had “too many it’s” to make any noise this season. All those quasi scouts who said “defense would be our undoing” or “they’ll never win with Flores as their shortstop.”

To coin a phrase, “How you like us now, bitches.”

There’s so much to love about this team but if I had to pick one I’d say I’m most impressed with their never say die attitude. What a tough and resilient bunch they are.

There were a few times I paid particular attention to how they would respond to extreme adversity; the loss of Zack Wheeler, the news on Edgin, the Mejia suspension, losing Wright to the DL, to name a few. And each time the team rose to the occasion. Each time the players stepped up. Each time they delivered performances that resonated and showed just how much character these guys have. What a wonderful story this will be when it’s all said and done.

So here we are, riding a historic nine game winning streak that has seen us outscore our opponents 48 runs to 23, and I can’t help thinking how familiar it all seems. The overpowering starting pitching, a shutdown bullpen, the timely hitting, and of course the confidence and swagger, and all I can think of is 1986.

There’s still 90 percent of the season left, yes, and a lot could go wrong, but I don’t see that happening. There’s so much that has gone right that I have to believe the baseball gods must be shining down on us. It feels like this is our time. Like this is our year.
