I swear, I learn more about the Mets from reading our comment threads than I do anywhere else. Everyday I learn something new – sometimes good, sometimes bad. This morning it is certainly bad.

We all know that the Mets have spent money like a drunken sailor for a long time now. There’s no real surprise there, but I had no idea it was this bad…

Check out this exchange between DrDooby and Mr North Jersey:

The Mets have been to the playoffs in just 3 out of 25 years while sporting a Top 3 in majors payroll on average and haven’t won the World Series during that time frame. That’s awful, sorry. This should be a franchise that reaches the playoffs in 15 out of 25 years.

Mr North Jersey

This.

The Mets have spent $1,785,625,318 in payroll according to USA Today over the last 22 years coming into 2013.

That’s tops in the National League and 3rd Highest in MLB.

They have only three playoff appearances to show for that, resulting in zero World Series.

That is just Awful.

The Minnesota Twins, for just one example, spent $1,026,298,471 in payroll according to USA Today over the same 22 years coming into 2013.

That is $759,326,847 less than the NY Mets.

Yet the Twins have seven playoff appearances and one World Series title during that time frame.
