After Sandy Alderson stepped down last month due to a recurrence of cancer, the Mets named a triumvirate in his place: Omar Minaya, J.P. Ricciardi and John Ricco, who had worked as the assistant general manager.
Ricco, 50, has served as the Mets assistant GM since 2006, and has often been considered an option to one day be Alderson’s successor.
However, despite the fact he is working alongside two others in that capacity right now, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic says the Mets have reservations about making him the permanent general manager beyond this year.
Ricco, however, is not worried with whatever the Mets decide to do.
“I’ve got enough in front of me here to try to do right by Sandy, do right by (manager) Mickey (Callaway), do right by the organization, try to get through these next few months and make good decisions for the long-term,” Ricco said.
“I’ve been here 15 years. I feel like under the right circumstances, I’d love to be a GM. But really, that’s not something I’m focused on. This organization has been great to me. I’ve been through a couple of different regimes. We’ll see what happens at the end of the year.”
The Mets plan to hold a bigger search later this year.
