According to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, both the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants have checked in on a possible trade in recent weeks for Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto.
The majority of the Mets’ trade buzz recently has been regarding the potential deal for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz, but despite that being in the spotlight right now, those are not the only players the Mets are keeping an eye on. They are still very much interested in upgrading at catcher, and a trade for arguably the game’s best catcher remains a very real possibility.
Heyman originally reported that the Astros, Dodgers, and Yankees were among many teams with interest, but that there is currently no clear frontrunner. He added that the Mets and Giants are among the teams to check in, but as noted before, they are far from the only teams with interest.
The popular interest in Realmuto makes sense, as the 27-year-old catcher has been worth 12.3 fWAR over the last three years and considered the best catcher in the game by many. Heyman mentioned that he could realistically help just about any team, and it hasn’t come down to any finalists yet.
He also noted that while the Marlins would prefer to trade Realmuto out of division, it is not a priority and certainly does not eliminate the Mets from the race.
Talks are yet to heat up much yet with any team in particular, and as of right now the big focus is the impending Cano and Diaz trade that could possibly be just hours away from being finalized. But this is certainly something to keep an eye on in the near future as the Mets look to improve their catching situation.
