Steve Popper of The Record had some interesting things to say in one of his recent articles regarding Willie Randolph and the Mets.
The one that caught my attention was a quote where he cites fellow writer Bob Klapisch…
Willie Randolph can’t consider a just-above-.500 record lucky. One person in the higher echelon of the franchise already told The Record’s Bob Klapisch last week that the honeymoon is over and the countdown is on to start turning things around. The word was that an 88-win season wasn’t the sort of thing that ownership was counting on when it shelled out a massive contract for Johan Santana in the winter. And the Mets’ 14-12 record puts them on pace for 87 wins.
In the article he categorically points out the team’s major weaknesses and vulnerabilities which include; age, the bullpen, defense and a sporadic offense.
He closes his article with an ominous suggestion…
Randolph has been on the hot seat and it’s getting more uncomfortable. It’s hard to blame him for last year’s collapse, but once management left him dangling for 24 hours after the season, it turned up the heat. A good start might have erased that. A marginal month is in the books. Another one might have a new boss.
