Tuesday, Rob Piersall posted grades for the Mets outfielders which can be found here.
Wednesday, Logan posted the grades for the Mets starting rotation which can be found here.
Thursday, I post my grades for the Mets bullpen and spot starter which you can here.
These are consensus grades among MMO’s editors – Myself, Barer, Piersall, and Joe D.
Sandy Alderson – The Mets General Manager left the team vulnerable in rotation and bullpen depth with the lack of veteran signings to help protect against injury. Even more so in the bullpen when they knew their closer Jeurys Familia was facing a possible suspension. He refused to call up top prospect Amed Rosario while Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera continued to fail miserably at shortstop. The odd usage, or lack thereof, from the Mets an as organization of the new 10-day disabled list left them playing shorthanded on numerous occasions.
Grade: D
Terry Collins – The Mets biggest culprit for their failure this year is the multitude of key players on the disabled list, let’s not mistake that. However, the constant mishandling and overuse of top relievers like Addison Reed and Jerry Blevins has been a glaring issue for Terry this season. Whether it was Collin’s decision or that of Alderson, Reyes continued to play despite being one of the worst players in baseball and Cabrera stayed at short despite not being able to move.
Grade: D
Dan Warthen – Walks, walk and more walks. The Mets pitching staff walked an alarming 3.69 per nine innings, the sixth worst in baseball and up from 2.73 BB/9 last season. The Mets first half 4.94 ERA was the third worst in the major leagues and allowed the sixth highest home run rate in the majors at 1.42 per nine innings.
Grade: D
Kevin Long – Offense wasn’t the big issue in the first half for the Mets with them ranking 14th in the majors at 4.72 runs per game and striking out only 19.8% of the time (8th best in baseball). The Mets set a new franchise record with 129 home runs in the first half and led the majors with 79 homers on the road. Michael Conforto and Jay Bruce have bounced back to be the Mets two best offensive players.
Grade: C+
