The New York Mets entered Sunday’s game in Atlanta at Truist Park losers of three in a row and 12 of their last 14. Thanks to big innings in the second and ninth frames, New York emerged victorious 10-8. Despite seeing the score go from 10-3 to 10-9 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Met were able to hold on. They are now 37-53 on the season.
The Mets did get a run in the game’s first inning. Francisco Lindor reached via error then came around thanks to a Bo Bichette single. However, the majority of the club’s damage came in the second and ninth innings. A.J. Ewing sparked the four-run frame with a solo home run in the second. Following that, Luis Torrens walked and Brett Baty doubled. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto each then had run-scoring hits.
In the ninth, Tyrone Taylor hit a solo homer to kick things off. Then, Bichette scored two via a bases-loaded double. Jared Young, who was pinch-hitting for Mark Vientos, scored two more with a single. That put a cherry on top of New York’s 10-run offensive outburst Sunday afternoon.
Individually, Soto, Bichette, Ewing, and Baty had multi-hit games. Bichette led the way with three hits. Soto and Bichette combined to drive in five of the team’s 10 runs.
On the mound, it was picture perfect for interim manager Andy Green until the ninth inning. Nolan McLean, Brooks Raley, and Luke Weaver were extremely solid before Huascar Brazobán blew up in the ninth prompting closer Devin Willams to have to close the game.
McLean, who has been pitching much better as of late after hitting a rough patch earlier in the season, went six innings and allowed five hits, three runs (two earned), waked only one, and struck out five. With the performance, his season ERA is down to 3.73.
Following McLean, Raley and Weaver set the Braves down in order. Weaver last allowed a run 59 games ago. Brazobán entered, and struggled. He allowed four hits and five runs, spurred by a Drake Baldwin grand slam. He was only able to get one out. Williams then entered and calmed things down, for the most part, getting the final two outs of the game and notching the save.
Player of the Game: Juan Soto
The Mets’ MVP continued his scorching hot season on Sunday, playing in an integral role in the victory. Juan Soto went 2-for-5 with two runs driven in as well as a walk. Each RBI came via the single Soto had in New York’s huge second inning. Soto has his OPS up to .966 which is currently second in the major leagues.
On Deck:
The Mets continue a rare wraparound series in Atlanta on Monday. The game is set for a 7:15 pm ET first pitch on SNY. The projected pitching matchup is Freddy Peralta versus Reynaldo López. Following that, the Mets will welcome in the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox in back-to-back series prior to the All-Star break.
