LAS VEGAS 7, TACOMA 5 – RESUMED FROM 5/4
After the game was suspended due to weather Sunday night, the 51′s and Rainiers resumed action on Monday with the score 7-5. It would remain that way as Las Vegas picks up their 21st win of the season. Rafael Montero started the game and pitched relatively decent going five innings. He was pulled in the 6th inning after the first two he faced reached base safely with a 5-1 lead in hand. Jeff Walters came in and immediately let the Rainiers back into this one giving up four runs. Two of which were charged to Montero. When play resumed Vic Black took over the reigns and ended the game retiring the only three batters he faced. Las Vegas scored all seven runs in the game thanks to three long balls by Wilmer Flores, Brandon Allen, and Andrew Brown. The second game that was scheduled for Sunday will be made up on July 22nd. The 51′s will get a chance at win number 22 in the second half of the double header.
TACOMA 3, LAS VEGAS 2
Taylor Teagarden’s go-ahead home run in the ninth inning was not enough for Las Vegas, as Jeff Walters walks back-to-back Rainiers with bases loaded to lose the game for the 51′s in real walk-off fashion. Noah Syndergaard got the start for Las Vegas and enjoyed a solid outing for the second time in as many starts, working in the 96-98 mph range. Syndergaard would go 5.2 innings, giving up just one run on seven hits and three walks, while racking up eight strikeouts. Thor threw 95 pitches (61 strikes) and lowered his ERA to 3.58 for the season. The 51′s would trail 1-0 in this one all the way until the 6th inning when an error would lead to a run to tie the game. Teagarden’s home run was his seventh of the season. Las Vegas travels to Salt Lake city for the first of four against the Bees. Dana Eveland will get the start for the 51′s.
NEW HAMPSHIRE 5, BINGHAMTON 0
Tyler Pill would suffer his fifth loss of the season, and Binghamton’s bats were silenced as the Fisher Cats blank the Mets 5-0. Scott Copeland would work eight innings of relief for New Hampshire after replacing starter Casey Janssen in the second inning. Copeland gave up just four hits to the sputtering Mets offense and struck out three. Pill gave up three of the five Fisher Cats runs in his five innings of work. Binghamton has now dropped three straight starting with the second game of the double header on Saturday. Not much offense to speak of other than Matt Reynolds two singles. Looking to have get things going in the right direction again, Binghamton will send Hansel Robles to the mound on Tuesday.
ST. LUCIE 5, CHARLOTTE 2
Gabriel Ynoa goes six and the bullpen slams the door as the St. Lucie Mets defeat the Charlotte Stone Crabs 5-2. Ynoa did pretty good job on Monday on his six inning every other start pattern he has going. This version allowed just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. The Mets pen would take over trying to preserve a 3-2 lead and did so in grand fashion. Paul Sewald did a good job as the first guy out pitching the seventh inning and allowing just a walk. Beck Wheeler would come in and close out the rest of the game going two dominant innings striking out four Stone Crabs en route to his third save of the season. Jairo Perez had a good night at the plate for St. Lucie going 2-for-3 with a triple, double, and three runs scored. Cam Maron would score the other two runs for St. Lucie who now improve to 18-13 on the season. The three-game series will come to a close on Tuesday with an early morning 10 am start. Steven Matz is scheduled to make the start.
SAVANNAH 5, ROME 1
The Sand Gnats would need a four-run 6th inning to get past the Rome Braves. Savannah would take the four-game series finale 5-1. Kevin McGowan would start for the Gnats and deal with control problems throughout his 5.2 innings walking four Braves. McGowan also allowed the only Rome run on six hits and striking out five. Akeel Morris would come in for McGowan and pick up the win but would also have some control issues as he ended his outing with two walks over 1.2 innings. Morris still hasn’t allowed a run this season and has given up just five hits total in 14.2 innings. Robert Coles would record his fifth save of the season for the 20-9 Sand Gnats. Stefan Sabol provided much of the offense on Monday going 2-for-3 with a home run which was his fifth of the season. Savannah has an off day on Tuesday as the travel to West Virginia for a three game series against the Power, the Pittsburgh Pirates Single-A affiliate. Ricky Knapp is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season.
METS MINORS PLAYER of the NIGHT
Monday was a difficult night for some relief pitchers in the Mets organization from the top level to the bottom level. A disappointing end to the 51′s game is just now a fun way to bring the night to a close. We will go to the St. Lucie game to find our MMN Player of the Night. Jairo Perez with a 2-for-3 night including a double, a triple, and three runs scored would be enough to take the honor.
