Mets Farm Report: July 28th, 2011

Buffalo Bisons 3 – Scranton/WB Yankees 6

Mark Cohoon had another decent start to finish his July and has finished the month 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 28 innings along with just one homerun allowed and a 6:20 BB:K ratio. The numbers may not sound spectacular, but they are a big step forward from his 1-4, 7.36 ERA in 25.2 innings in June with a 10:13 BB:K and six homeruns allowed. Five of the six hits he allowed today were doubles with three of them driving in a run. Brian Sweeney worked a perfect 6th, but then gave up a solo homerun, bases loaded single, and sac fly to score three runs in the 7th, picking up the lose.

Jesus Feliciano delivered a two-out single to score Jason Botts (walk) and Josh Satin (single) in the 4th. He was thrown out at second just after Satin scored. In the 6th inning Val Pascucci hit a solo homer to tie the game and the Herd loaded the bases on singles by Satin, Mike Baxter, and Luis Hernandez. Unfortunately Feliciano grounded into a double play this time to end the inning.

Binghamton Mets 1 – Harrisburg Senators 2

This one didn’t end until around 1:15 a.m. Eastern time. Matt Harvey certainly pitched well enough to win this one. In his best start at Double-A he struckout 10 men in seven innings while allowing just a run in seven innings on four hits and two walks. It was a leadoff walk in the 7th that cost him. The player stole second and then scored on a two-out single that cost Harvey the win. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 14th with two outs when Rhiner Cruz allowed a triple and walk-off single.

Juan Lagares‘s solo homerun in the 7th was the B-Mets only run. The offense was really terrible otherwise, as up until that point the Senators starter had faced the minimum. Their only other chance to score in the entire game was in the 13th when Raul Reyes leadoff with a double, but no one could bring him home. Pathetic day.

St. Lucie Mets 3 – Daytona Cubs 1

Johan Santana‘s first rehab start was very successful. He went three scoreless and allowed just two hits and a hit batter while strikingout three. Greg Peavey followed Santana and rebounded from his last outing with an excellent performance. Cory Vaughn aided his pitcher by throwing out a runner trying to advance from second to third in the 6th after a run had already scored. Peavey has now allowed exactly one run in five of his seven appearances. In the other two he has allowed eight runs and nine runs.

Cesar Puello picked up where he left of yesterday with a leadoff triple in the 3rd. Francisco Pena singled him in and the Mets threatened later in the inning, but Pena got thrown out trying to go first to third and Wilmer Flores and Jefry Marte couldn’t get a hit with RISP. In the next inning Puello singled to score Stefan Welch who led the inning of with a single. Vaughn later came in to score on a wild pitch.

Savannah Sand Gnats 6 – Greensboro Grasshoppers 7

Yohan Almonte lasted six innings despite getting hit awfully hard. He gave up two home runs, a solo shot and two-run homer, as well as three doubles (nine total hits) that tallied six runs. He was in trouble all game and allowed runs in four of the six innings. Greensboro botched a sac bunt attempted with two on in the 8th with the lead runner get thrown out at third, but the next batter singled to score the would-be winning run. On that single a double play occurred that makes no sense and one would have to see to understand. Try decifering this mess,

Double play, second baseman Luis Nieves to catcher Albert Cordero to left fielder Alonzo Harris to shortstop Wilfredo Tovar to first baseman Joe Bonfe to second baseman Luis Nieves. Aaron Dudley out at home. Jacob Realmuto out at 2nd.

The offense did a terrific job rallying late. Albert Cordero began the comeback with a solo homer in the 7th and then a passed ball in the 8th opened the way for Darrell Ceciliani to score on a groudnout by Rafael Fernandez. The Gnats brought the game within one in the 9th inning with a Joe Bonfe two-run homer, however, the attempt fell short.

Brooklyn Cyclones 2 – Connecticut Tigers 1

Another terrific performance out of Randy Fontanez who has been pretty impressive thus far. With a scoreless 9th inning T.J. Chism picked up the win and joined Tyson Seng in the sub-1.00 ERA club. Travis Taijeron ended the game with a walkoff homer, his 6th of the season. Taijeron has a ridiculous .305 ISO so far and moved into tops in the NYPL today in that category. Last year in Cory Vaughn’s impressive campaign his ISO was .250.
