Mets Minors: Armed For The Stretch-Run
Buffalo 8, Pawtucket 2

The Bisons beat the Pawtucket Red Sox by a score of 8-2 last night. After rumors swirling for weeks about the future of Jeurys Familia, he responded with a stellar outing in Syracuse, allowing one run in 6.1 innings. Last night, he looked to follow up with another dominant performance against the RedSox, and did just that. The Red Sox never even came close to scoring off Familia, and couldn’t put together any kind of threat the whole night. Familia scattered hits and only walked one, a great recipe for success. At the end of his night, Familia had pitched 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only five hits and striking out six.
The offense was just as good last night, scoring eight runs off Red Sox pitching. For the first four innings, the Bisons couldn’t touch Pawtucket starter Billy Buckner (yes…) but finally got to him in the fifth inning. In that inning, it was Fred Lewis who started the scoring for the Bisons, hitting a two-run blast to make it 2-0. Buffalo would take that lead and run with it. They scored four more runs in the sixth inning. The first two were scored on a two-run homer by Josh Satin to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Matt Tuiasosopo joined the party, hitting a two-run homer of his own, his eighth of the year. That made it 6-0 Buffalo.
The Bisons would scratch off runs in each of the last two innings. The first came on an RBI ground-out by Tuiasosopo and the second came on a solo homer by Fred Lewis, his second of the game. The Red Sox just couldn’t catch up, as the Buffalo bullpen wasn’t great– Manny Acosta and Elvin Ramirez each allowed a run– but it was enough to get the job done and close out an 8-2 victory.
Herd Rumblings: Familia improved to 7-5 on the night with the win, his second straight. Before his last start in Syracuse, Familia hadn’t recorded a win since June 6. His six strikeouts were the most he’s had since that June 6 start. Fred Lewis’ two home runs brought his total up to seven on the season. He now has three in his last two games. Josh Satin continues to have a solid season in Buffalo. His home run was his tenth of the year and his fourth in his last ten games. The series with Pawtucket continues tonight at 6:05 PM when right-hander Chris Schwinden (4-7, 3.44) opposes righty Zach Stewart (1-0, 1.96) for the Sox.
Binghamton 2, Erie 0

Binghamton and Erie played two on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton with the B-Mets looking for their first win of the second half of the season. They wouldn’t have to wait long to find it, as Binghamton took the first game of the doubleheader against the Erie SeaWolves by a score of 2-0.
Cory Mazzoni started the game for the B-Mets, throwing a complete game for the home team and earning his third win of the season. In seven innings, Mazzoni allowed four hits, scattered across four different innings, and struck out one Erie batter. He issued no walks in the game, and shut out his opponent for the second game in a row. Mazzoni has now held opposing batters scoreless in the past fourteen innings he has pitched.
The B-Mets batters only needed the bottom of the first inning to secure enough runs to earn the team’s 42nd win of 2012. After a Juan Lagares single and Reese Havens walk, Wilmer Flores stepped to the plate and tripled to right field scoring both runners. Flores himself was left on base as Eric Campbell struck out, and then Jefry Marte and Dustin Martin both flew out to end the inning. Erie pitcher Patrick Cooper, who took the loss in the game, settled down and held the B-Mets hitless for the remaining six innings.
In game two, Mark Cohoon took the hill for the B-Mets. Cohoon pitched six innings for Binghamton, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out six. After 97 pitches, 62 of them for strikes, Cohoon was replaced by Robert Carson in the top of the seventh.
Cohoon left the game with the Binghamton Mets ahead four to one. In the top of the seventh, Carson struck out two of the first three batters he faced, and gave up a double to a third batter. With Erie down to their last out, and the B-Mets still holding the three run lead, the SeaWolves Wes Thigpen hit a liner back through the box that caught Carson on the shoulder. The B-Mets trainer and manager Pedro Lopez evaluated Carson, and he stayed in the game.
From there, Carson gave up a single and a double to the next two batters and Erie tied the game at four. Carson’s line on the night read one inning pitched, three runs on four hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. He was charged with his third blown save of the season in the outing. Ryan Fraser took the mound in the top of the eighth, and in one inning worth of work he struck out one and allowed no runs on no hits. Fraser was the pitcher of record in the bottom of the eighth when the B-Mets ended the game in walk off fashion, earning him his second win of the season.
In that bottom of the eighth, Wilmer Flores walked and then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Campbell. The next batter Allan Dykstra was intentionally walked, and then Jefry Marte stepped to the plate. Marte hit a line shot to right center field scoring Flores from second and giving the B-Mets the five to four walk off win, and the double header sweep. Marte was 2-for-4 in game two, with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Juan Lagares went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Michael Fisher was 1-for-4 in the game, his one hit a two run home run in the bottom of the third.
B-Mets Buzz: Game four of the five game series will be played on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium, featuring Zack Wheeler (8-4, 2.62) against the SeaWolves James Avery (9-6, 4.40). Sunday’s rubber match, the last time Erie and Binghamton will meet in the 2012 regular season, will pit the B-Mets Gonzalez Germen against Erie’s Cesar Carrillo.
Tampa 8, St. Lucie 2

The St. Lucie Mets lost a sloppy one on Friday the 13th as they fell to the Tampa Yankees 8-2.
Erik Goeddel started the game and continued his recent struggles with his command although his defense provided little support as they committed three errors behind him including the 20th of the season by third baseman Aderlin Rodriguez. Goeddel took the loss lasting five innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits a pair of walks while striking out four. One of the hits was a solo home run.
.Hamilton Bennett was victimized by the poor defensive effort as well and was charged with three unearned runs in his inning of work, while, John Church pitched the final two frames and allowed just one hit.
The Mets had just five hits on the night and two of them came from catcher Blake Forsythe who stroked a double and scored a run.
Note: Jason Bay played DH and went 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
Lucie Logistics: Erik Goeddel has seen his ERA soar to 3.80 after allowing 12 runs in his last 12.2 innings pitched over three starts. Cesar Puello who was 1-1 with an RBI, was removed in the 4th inning for a pinch hitter. I don’t yet know if this was injury related, but I’ll keep you posted. Cory Vaughn went 0-for-3 and struck out three times narrowly missing out on a Golden Sombrero by drawing a walk in his final at-bat. The Mets and Yankees wrap up their series on Saturday night at 8:00 PM. Southpaw Angel Cuan who is 4-6 with a 3.51 ERA, will take the hill for St. Lucie.
Savannah 10, Delmarva 6

Friday night the Savannah Sand Gnats (50-39) defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds (34-56) by a score of 10-6 to take third game of a four game set. Savannah came out in attack mode in the top of the first inning. After back to back one out walks by center-fielder Gilbert Gomez and catcher Cam Maron, third-baseman Brian Harrison reached on an error by shortstop Mychal Givens to load the bases. DH Dustin Lawley smacked a bases-clearing double down the leftfield line that rattled around in the corner for his 22nd two bagger of the season. After Lawley moved to third on a Cole Fenzel groundout, RF Charley Thurber singled him home to give the Gnats the early 4-0 lead.
The Sand Gnats added another in the top of the third. Dustin Lawley singled to leadoff the frame, his second hit in two at bats, stole second and scored on a Greg Pron double over the centerfielder Glynn Davis’ head, to make it 5-0 Savannah. Delmarva (BAL) answered back with a single run in their half of the third on an RBI single by Taylor Teagarden to make it now 5-1 Savannah. Savannah went quietly in the fourth and fifth innings as Delmarva starter Williams Louico seemed to settle down.
In the bottom of the fifth the Shorebirds got back into the game with two runs to cut the score to 5-3. Gnats starter Alex Panteliodis began to unravel. Yielding a leadoff single to Glynn Davis and promptly balking him over to second. “Pants” then uncorked a wild-pitch advancing Davis to third and Davis would then score on a sac-fly by Taylor Teagarden. Panteliodis then surrendered a single to Micheal Ohlman before being lifted for Marcos Camarena. Marcos first pitch was hammered into deep right-field for a run-scoring double before punching out Mike Planeta to end the threat.
The Gnats got one run back in the top of the sixth. Charley Thurber led off with a line-drive double over the left fielder’s head, took third on a De La Cruz groundout and scored on a wild-pitch to give Savannah a 6-3 lead. The score remained 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. After one out single by Nick Delmonico, Camarena struck out Taylor Teagarden. Micheal Ohlman singled to put runners on first and second and two out for Connor Narron who represented the tying run. Narron unloaded on a Camarena fastball for a three-run bomb to tie the score at 6-6.
After blowing leads of 5-0 and 6-3, Savannah showed their resiliency by quickly taking back the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. SS Yucarybert De La Cruz reached on an error and second-baseman Brandon Brown hit a two-run home run that barely cleared the left-field wall. After given back the lead Marcos Camarena bared down and retired the Shorebirds in order in the bottom of the 8th.
The Gnats would add two insurance runs in the top of the 9th. Dustin lawley worked out a walk to lead off the 9th, took second on a passed ball and scored on a Cole Fenzel groundball single through the right side. Greg Pron followed with his second RBI double of the night, scoring Savannah’s fourth unanswered run to give the Gnats a 10-6 lead and that would be the final as Gnats closer T.J. Chism would come in to shut the door in the 9th. Entering in a non save situation, T.J. surrendered a lead off single but quickly set down the next three hitters to end the game.
Gnats Gnotes: RHP Alex Panteliodis took the no decision Friday night. After a solid start to his outing Alex hit a wall in the 5th leaving after 4.2 innings allowing seven hits three runs all earned, one walk and one strikeout. Alex remains 3-4 on the year with his ERA on the upswing at 3.92 after getting off to a stellar start to his season. Alex in his last ten starts is pitching to a 5.49 ERA covering 39.1 innings, 58 hits 20 BB’s and only 19 K’s. Marcos Camarena relieved Alex in the 5th, pitched 3.1 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits punching out three. Marcos has scuffled oer his last three outings covering ten innings getting touched up for 14 runs of which 13 are earned. T.J. Chism pitched a scoreless ninth, yielding a leadoff single and nothing else with one punch-out. Tomorrow night Savannah heads to Lakewood to take on the Blueclaws of the Philadelphia Phillies. Lakewood has rebounded in the second half to play 13-9 baseball after finishing the first half at 26-43. South-paw James Fuller (2-1, 1.54) will take the mound for Savannah while right-hander Moises Rivas (0-0, 4.50) will go for Lakewood.
Connecticut 5, Brooklyn 2

The Cyclones ran into some bad luck on Friday the 13th, as costly errors led them to lose their series finale 5-2 to the Connecticut Tigers on Friday night.
Gabriel Ynoa gave the Cyclones another great effort going six innings, while giving up only one earned run, but thanks to a pair of defensive miscues, five runs scored. Ynoa was perfect for the first two innings, but after five hits, a walk, a stolen base, and two costly errors, five runs crossed the plate. Those five runs were the only runs allowed, but that was enough to give the Cyclones the loss. Through those six innings Ynoa gave up six hits, one walk and struck out four batters. Ynoa receives his first loss of the season and now has a 3.30 ERA. Timothy Peterson pitched the last two innings for the Cyclones, allowing no runs on two hits, two walks, while striking out one.
The Cyclones attempted a comeback in the fifth inning with a one-out base hit from Brandon Nimmo, a walk to Jonathon Clark, and then a two-out, two-run single from Juan Gamboa to center field. Nimmo had three hits on the night, one run and one strikeout. Nimmo is now hitting .214 on the season. Sefan Sabol and Phillip Evans both had one hit as well, with two walks from Evans and Sabol is now hitting .300 on the year.
Brooklyn Brew: Brandon Nimmo leads the team in RBIs (15), walks (20) and strikeouts (25). After the game, during their seven hour road trip, the Cyclones team bus got into a fender bender with a semi-truck. All players okay. They had a comical evening on Twitter with each other as the bus was broken down on side of the road. Up Next: Cyclones start up a three game series against the State College Spikes. First game Saturday night at 7:05 PM, with Luis Mateo (3-1, 1.90) throwing for the ‘Clones.
Kingsport – Burlington
Postponed Rain
Yet Again
The Kingsport Mets three-game series with the Burlington Royals was wiped out this week due to heavy rains in the area. The series will have to be made up later in the season. Tonight Kingsport opens a three-game set on the road with the Johnson City Cardinals who are 11-11 on the year. The K-Mets have lost six games in a row and stand at 4-16 for the season so far. Right-hander Persio Reyes (0-3, 11.57) will try and turn his fortunes around as he starts tonight’s game for the K-Mets. Left-hander Stalyn Lopez (0-1, 6.75) will take the ball for Johnson City.
