I’ve had all morning to reflect on the saga that has become the Jose Reyes and Keith Hernandez situation. I think we all know that the New York Post greatly exaggerated the situation and made more of it than it needed to be.
I’ve read quite a few blogs since I posted the original blog on it, and I read many opinions from other bloggers and commenters. The media got what they wanted. They were able to divide us all over again. First they did it with Willie and now this.
I’m surprised at how many have chosen sides and flung their support on one side or the other. I don’t understand how you can choose between Jose Reyes and Keith Hernandez, when they are both so beloved in Mets lore. Someone please explain to me how that is even humanly possible for a Met fan to do. Can a parent choose between their two children, or a child between two parents?
I just wish we were all smart enough to realize when the media is trying to divide and conquer us. Especially the New York Post and their lopsided coverage of the Mets and Yankees.
The fact is that on any team and in any sport, things like this happen. For crying out loud just last week Manny Ramirez threw to the ground the 70-year old Red Sox PR Director. Could you even imagine and Mets player doing that to Jay Horwitz? Of course not…
In the heat of battle, tempers sometimes flare up and fingers get pointed. It’s just the nature of the beast. Losing and not meeting expectations can further heighten the angst. Let’s not choose sides between two beloved Mets.
Last night, Keith Hernandez made me laugh several times and Jose Reyes made me jump up and shout when he cleared the bases with his three run triple in the third inning. Let’s not spoil those magic moments because the media has nothing better to report.
We have a big game today with Johan Santana trying to win the first of a four-game series with our division rival, the Philadelphia Phillies. Let the game and the players provide all the fireworks on this 4th of July night. Leave the media to their own devices and don’t let them interfere with our love for the game and our love for all the New York Mets both past and present.
