The miserable June for the New York Mets (36-45) continued on Thursday as they wrapped up a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers (43-38).

Even though Max Scherzer gave the Mets a quality start on the mound, the offense once again failed to pick up a big hit with the bases loaded twice in the final three innings as they fall, 3-2. With the defeat, New York is now 6-18 in June, and they are 12-15 in one-run games this year (five straight one-run losses) as they still can’t seem to get the big hit.

“It’s frustrating because there was a game there to be won,” Buck Showalter said after the game. “Max pitched well, got some good things out of the bullpen to keep it close. … We hit some balls hard that they caught. Kind of snake bit from that standpoint it seems like.”

Milwaukee ended up breaking a 2-2 tie against the Mets bullpen in the seventh. T.J. McFarland (0-1, 6.75 ERA) came in for the second straight game and after getting Christian Yelich to ground out, the next two batters (William Contreras and Willy Adames) reached base via an infield single and a hit by pitch.

Buck Showalter would go to the bullpen and bring in Dominic Leone. However, Leone could not get out of the jam as Owen Miller reached base on an infield single and Brian Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to the track in right-center.

New York had a chance to counter back in the bottom of the inning. Mark Canha led off the inning with a single, Danny Mendick (pinch-hitting for Brett Baty) was able to reach base on a fielder’s choice and an error by Anderson, and Brandon Nimmo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, the rally came to a halt on an inning-ending double play by Starling Marte against Elvis Peguero. It was Marte’s second GIDP of the night.

Two innings later, New York had another chance to tie the game against Devin Williams, who they saw for the third time in the series. Canha worked a one-out walk and Francisco Álvarez singled to center. Later in the inning, after a Nimmo walked loaded the bases, Marte struck out swinging on three pitches (all changeups) to end the game.

The Mets initially got on the board with back-to-back homers from Baty and Nimmo. Victor Caratini tied the game up a couple of frames later with a two-run homer. In the defeat, Tommy Pham continued his good hitting in the series as he went 2-for-4 and had the only multi-hit performance for the Mets. Pham had six hits in the final three games of the series.

On a bullpen note, Drew Smith appeared in his third game of the series and threw a 1-2-3 eighth (one strikeout). David Robertson pitched the ninth and worked around a walk to throw a hitless frame.

Player Of The Game

Even though the Mets offense has left a lot to be desired in June, Nimmo has been one of the bright spots. His solo home run in the third gave him his seventh in the month of June, which is the most he has hit in any month in his career, as Mathew Brownstein pointed out. It ended up breaking a tie with Francisco Lindor for the team lead in home runs this month.

 Stat Of The Game

With the loss tonight, the Mets have been defeated 45 times in the first 81 games of the year as the season is now at the official halfway point. If the team continues this pace, they would lose 90 games for the fifth time in 27 years, which would be shocking when you consider the talent that is on this roster.

On Deck

The Mets will continue their homestand on Friday when they begin a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants (45-36). You can watch the game on SNY at 7:10 p.m EST. Carlos Carrasco (2-3, 6.19) will get the start for the Mets against Alex Cobb (5-2, 3.09) for the Giants.
