The Mets and Billy Eppler are progressing on a four-year deal for him to become their next general manager, says MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman.

Eppler, the former GM of the Angels and Yankees executive, is expected to be announced officially on Friday, Newsday’s David Lennon adds.

New York began its search for a front office executive over six weeks ago, cycling through more than 20 names. The Mets officially transitioned to a general manager search after failing for the second offseason in a row to hire a president of baseball operations.

The 46-year-old Eppler spent a decade with the Yankees under Brian Cashman before taking over as general manager of the Angels in 2015. He remained in LA until 2020 when he was let go with a year remaining on his contract.
