The Mets announced this afternoon that they’ve officially signed lefty Justin Wilson to a two year deal. In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-Man roster, shortstop Gavin Cecchini has been designated for assignment.

Cecchini, a 2015 first round draft pick, missed most of last season due to injury a foot injury. After struggling during the 2017 season, he was showing some improvements at the plate. Through 31 games, Cecchini was hitting .294/.342/.468 with 11 doubles, a triple, two home runs, and nine RBI.

The shortstop makes sense as the roster casualty due to the infield depth the Mets have brought in this offseason. It is also entirely possible the 25-year old could generate some interest on the trade market.
