Immediately after the conclusion of last night’s game, SNY announced that the Mets have designated Fernando Nieve for assignment.

After Oliver Perez (6.70), Nieve (6.00) had the highest ERA among all Mets relievers, allowing 28 earned runs in 42 innings pitched while making 40 appearances for the Mets.

In five appearances in July, Nieve posted an unsightly 7.56 ERA in 8.1 IP. The Mets had claimed Nieve off waivers from the Astros last year.

Replacing Nieve, will be right-hander Manny Acosta who boarded a flight to Los Angeles from Buffalo and is expected to be activated before tonight’s game.

Acosta was 2-3 with five saves in 28 appearances for the Bisons. He has a 3.47 ERA to go with a 1.12 WHIP, and in 36.1 innings pitched he has struck out 36 batters while walking 12.

Acosta, originally drafted by the Yankees, was selected off waivers by the New York Mets from the Atlanta Braves during March of this year.
