After signing right-hander Brad Brach to a one-year contract on Friday afternoon, the New York Mets announced that fellow right-hander Chris Flexen was designated for assignment as the corresponding move.

Flexen, 25, was drafted by the Mets in the 14th round of the 2012 draft, putting together an 8.07 ERA over 27 major league appearances (11 starts; 68 innings) since making his MLB debut in 2017 and a 3.61 ERA over 122 MiLB appearances (105 starts).

The California product’s 1.76 ERA over 10 starts between Advanced-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton in 2017 led to his initial big league call-up, but Flexen’s been unable to replicate that level of success since.

Without minor league options remaining, Flexen was a presumable candidate for removal from the 40-man roster. Though, Chris Mazza, Jacob Rhame, or Paul Sewald could have been considered, as well.

We’ll keep you posted with more information as it becomes available.
