David Stearns

The Mets were denied access by the Milwaukee Brewers to interview David Stearns, their president of baseball operations, for a front office role, according to a report from the New York Post‘s Joel Sherman.

This was generally expected, as Stearns was denied access by owner Mark Attanasio last year to interview for a similar position with the Mets. Stearns also spoke with the Milwaukee media after they were eliminated from the playoffs last week and said, “I’m happy here,” noting he still had work to do to make the Brewers better.

Stearns has one year left of his contract with the Brewers.

That’s now two of the big three names–Stearns and Theo Epstein–the Mets have reportedly wanted for their president of baseball operations job to not follow through with a full interview process. Billy Beane is the third, but recently reports have trended that it is “unlikely” that he would leave a vice president job with the Oakland A’s to come build the baseball operations with the Mets.

Other names floated around that the Mets like include Dodgers executives Josh Brynes and Brandon Gomes and Giants general manager Scott Harris. The Mets will have to wait to interview the first two names until the Dodgers are eliminated from the playoffs (or win the championship).
