The New York Mets (1-0) opened their season with a 6-0 shutout win over the Atlanta Braves (0-1) this afternoon at Citi Field.

This is the first Opening Day shutout win for New York since 2012.

Pitching:

Noah Syndergaard toed the rubber for the Mets in their Opening Day matchup this afternoon and turned in a quality performance, tossing six innings while scattering five hits and walking zero, punching out seven.

Syndergaard left the game after six innings with a blister on his middle finger and was relieved by Hansel Robles who tossed a clean seventh and Fernando Salas who chipped in a perfect eighth, also recording two strikeouts.

Robert Gsellman came in to seal the deal for the Mets in the ninth and despite an early scoring threat, Gsellman was able to regroup and finish off Atlanta with a double play that ended the game.

Offense:

Syndergaard and Braves’ starter Julio Teheran matched each other pitch for pitch for the first six innings, but once the Mets got to Atlanta’s bullpen, the rest was history.

To kick off the seventh inning, Asdrubal Cabrera singled which brought around Wilmer Flores from second. Flores was initially called out at the plate, but after reviewing the play, it was determined that Flores was safe on the play and the call was reversed.

Former Mets great Eric O’Flaherty came on later in the sixth and proceeded to allow the Mets to bust the game open, which was topped off by a bases clearing double from Lucas Duda to make it 6-0, a lead New York wouldn’t relinquish. Braves relievers walked five Mets in the 7th inning.

Duda and Jay Bruce combined to go 1-for-4 with a combined four walks and four runs batted in, while Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-5.

On Deck:

The Mets are off tomorrow, but continue their series with Atlanta on Wednesday night, with Jacob deGrom taking on former Met Bartolo Colon. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m at Citi Field.
