The New York Mets (75-70) beat the Arizona Diamondbacks (75-71) 9-0 on Wednesday night at Citi Field. The Mets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. (Box Score)

Pitching

Steven Matz (10-8, 3.84 ERA) got the ball for the Mets, looking to continue a solid stretch in which he has not given up more than two earned runs in his previous six starts.

The southpaw did exactly that as he delivered six shutout innings for the Mets. He held the Diamondbacks to four hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters.

Matz ran into a troublesome situation in the second inning, but one which he was able to overcome. He walked the bases loaded with no outs before striking out Carson Kelly and getting Kevin Cron to ground into a double play. Walker Lockett started getting warmed up in the bullpen during the second inning in case Matz could not finish it, but thanks to a quick rebound, Lockett’s services were not needed.

Jeurys Familia came into the game to pitch the seventh inning. Familia allowed two hits in his inning of work, but did not allow a run.

Paul Sewald pitched the eighth inning and delivered a 1-2-3 inning for the Mets.

Tyler Bashlor was called upon to get the final three outs of the game. He allowed two baserunners, but was able to get the job done in the end.

Offense

The Mets wasted no time against starter Robbie Ray (12-8, 4.30 ERA). Amed Rosario led off the game with a double and Jeff McNeil reached base with one out after getting hit by a pitch. The duo then pulled off a double steal which allowed Rosario to score when Wilson Ramos grounded out.

J.D. Davis then hit a ball to left field which originally looked like Tim Locastro would catch, but instead fell in front of him for a single. Todd Frazier took advantage of the misplay by launching a ball over the center field wall to give the Mets an early 4-0 lead. Brandon Nimmo immediately followed suit by also hitting a home run to center to put the Mets up 5-0 in the first.

The Mets did not limit their scoring to only the first inning. McNeil kept the offense hot in the second with a solo shot to right field.

Frazier kept the good times rolling in the third by crushing his second home run of the game to put the Mets up 7-0.

After a couple of quiet innings from the Mets offensively, they were back at it again in the sixth. Rosario reached base with a one-out walk and he scored along with McNeil after the Squirrel crushed his second homer of the game to right field.

Frazier and McNeil led the offense with two homers apiece. Overall Frazier went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while McNeil went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
