Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote about how Brewers manager Craig Counsell could be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason, and he notes that the Mets might be a good landing spot.

“Counsell’s most obvious landing spot could be the Mets, who soon might hire his previous boss in Milwaukee, David Stearns, as president of baseball operations.”

Steve Cohen has been trying to hire Stearns since the billionaire bought the Mets, and David finally becomes a free agent this offseason. Could the Mets rejuvenate the organization by hiring Stearns as the president of baseball ops and Counsell as the manager to replace Buck Showalter?

Well, as I reported on Thursday, the Mets fired four directors, including the director of player development Kevin Howard. Indeed, the type of moves you can make to allow a new head of baseball operations to bring their people in.

Buck Showalter has one year left on his deal with the Mets, but the manager’s role could be another position the Mets decide to let potential new baseball decision maker choose his candidate.

Counsell currently has a 689-614 record with the Brewers, including four postseason appearances in his first eight seasons, and Milwaukee leads the central division by three games.

Whether it’s Counsell and Stearns or another combination of manager and president of baseball ops, it’s becoming more apparent every day that the Mets will look different in 2024 from more than just a player standpoint.
