According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Terry Collins stated he met with Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson, and he expects the entire coaching staff to return next season. The 2017 season is the last season Collins is under contract as the Mets manager.
Collins is the 20th manager in Mets history, and he has been the manager since 2011. Currently, he is the third longest tenured manager in Mets history having managed 972 games. Should Collins manage 40 games in 2017, he will become the longest tenured manager in Mets history.
Through Collins first six seasons with the Mets, he is 481-491. With 56 more wins in 2017, he would surpass Bobby Valentine for second all-time on the Mets managerial wins list. As of right now, Collins trails Davey Johnson by 114 wins for the most wins in Mets history.
Collins and Valentine are the only Mets managers to go to the postseason in back-to-back years. Collins, Valentine, and Johnson are the only three Mets managers to lead the Mets to two postseason berths. No Mets manager has ever gone to three postseasons.
Joining Collins in his quest to lead the Mets to a third consecutive postseason berth will be:
| Position | Coach | First Season |
| Hitting Coach | Kevin Long | 2015 |
| Asst. Hitting Coach | Pat Roessler | 2015 |
| Pitching Coach | Dan Warthen | 2008 |
| First Base Coach | Tom Goodwin | 2012 |
| Third Base Coach | Tim Teufel | 2012 |
| Bench Coach | Dick Scott | 2016 |
| Bullpen Coach | Ricky Bones | 2012 |
| Bullpen Catcher | Dave Racaniello | 2001 |
| Bullpen Catcher | Eric Langill | 2011 |
While it has not been announced, it seems safe to assume that each of the aforementioned coaches will return to the roles they served during the 2016 season.
While the coaching staff is largely credited for helping the team weather a number of injuries this past season, there are some things that need to be improved upon next season.
Notably, Collins admitted he was distracted in a September 10th game in which he kept Wilmer Flores in the game instead of replacing him with a pinch runner. His bench coach, Scott, didn’t alert him to the need to get a pinch runner into the game, and his third base coach, Teufel, inadvisably sent the slow footed Flores home. Flores was dead to rights, and with his poor head first slide home, he would suffer a season ending wrist injury during the ensuing collision with Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski,
Should the Mets address their needs, they have the leadership in place to lead the team back to a third consecutive postseason.
