During a call with New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco this morning, MLB Network Radio was informed that the Mets are planning on calling up right-handed pitcher Bobby Wahl.
One of the two players acquired from the Oakland Athletics in the deadline trade of Jeurys Familia, Wahl has seven and two-thirds big league innings to his name, but has enjoyed a breakout All-Star season between Triple-A affiliates in Nashville and our own Las Vegas.
The 26-year-old currently boasts a 2.20 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and averages 14.6 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9 this year, just a season removed from a shoulder strain and thoracic outlet complications. He has struck out 42.7% of the batters he’s faced this year, fifth highest in minor league baseball.
It is unclear who loses a spot, but Wahl’s promotion entails a contract purchase – thus overbooking the 40-man roster. With the extent of Steven Matz‘s forearm tightness not yet known but set to be announced this afternoon, the corresponding move will surely be made before the start of tonight’s game.
