Tim Healey of Newsday reported that the Mets have called up right-handed reliever Yoan López ahead of their game Sunday against the Diamondbacks. In turn, they have sent Adonis Medina back down to Triple-A.

Medina was just called up Saturday (and David Peterson was sent to Syracuse), and he struck out the side Saturday night.

The Mets claimed López off of waivers from the Marlins back in March, and he now gets his first cup of coffee with the Mets in 2022. The Mets bullpen has thrown 11 1/3 innings this series alone, which has led to some emergency backups in the form of Medina and now López.

López debuted at the major league level in 2018 with the Diamondbacks and remained there through 2021. In those four years of work over 113 games, he tossed to a 4.25 ERA and a 1.289 WHIP. His best season came in 2019, where he pitched 60 innings and had a 3.41 ERA in that span.

In his brief time with Syracuse in 2022, his numbers have not been pretty. Over four games, he has a 9.82 ERA, and has a 2.182 WHIP.

López features three pitches: fastball, slider, and splitter. His fastball sits around 95 mph, slider at 87 mph, and splitter at 89 mph. He tends to use just the fastball and slider but will mix in the splitter every once in a while.

While he doesn’t have overpowering stuff, he is the kind of pitcher that gets the ball put in play. Historically he has been known for keeping the ball on the ground. The Mets don’t have a guy like that in the bullpen right now, which could make him a valuable piece in a double-play spot.

Also before the game, the Cincinnati Reds announced they claimed former Met Matt Reynolds, who the Mets designated for assignment on Wednesday.
