The Mets have selected the contract of starting prospect Tyler Pill from Triple-A Las Vegas. In corresponding moves, the Mets optioned Rafael Montero to Las Vegas and in order to make room on the 40-man roster, moved Seth Lugo to the 60-day DL.

With this news, Pill seems the most likely candidate to pitch in place of the injured Tommy Milone on Saturday with Josh Smoker being the other option.

Pill, 26, has a 1.96 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 46.0 innings this season for Las Vegas, and has a 4.01 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over seven minor league seasons.

After lefty Tommy Milone served up eight runs (seven earned) in less than two innings on Sunday, the Mets have begun to search for alternatives. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, one of the names that has come up is Tyler Pill.

Pill, a 26 year-old righty, has been in the Mets organization since 2011. This season, after not allowing an earned run in two starts for Double-A Binghamton, he was called up to Triple-A Las Vegas. In the very hitter-friendly league, he has gone 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA, striking out 23 batters in 46 innings while walking 14. His 1.96 ERA is good for best in the Pacific Coast League, and his 1.17 WHIP is 10th best.

As of now, Milone is going to make his next start. However, the Mets could choose to go a different direction with either Pill or someone perhaps outside the organization.

It’s always nice to see a minor leaguer rewarded for solid play, especially one that’s been in the organization for so long. If Milone does make his next start and it resembles Sunday even in the slightest, Pill’s Major League debut could be hastened.
