In this weekly feature for MMO, I’m going to look back at the previous week’s games and share some interesting data and information that I’ve collected through various websites such as Baseball-ReferenceFanGraphs, and Baseball Savant. It’ll be a mixture of facts, stats, and analytics.

Let’s get into the seven days between June 19 and June 25.

Marlins vs. Mets

The Mets defeated the Marlins by a score of 6-0 and won three out of four games. It was the Mets’ 69th game of the season and their 11th shutout. Only the 1988 Mets had more shutouts in their first 69 games (13 shutouts). The 1968 Mets also had 11 shutouts.

David Peterson started for the Mets and recorded 19 swings and misses over 5.1 innings pitched. That’s the second-most whiffs Peterson has recorded in a major league start for his career. His high is 23 on September 19, 2020, against the Atlanta Braves.

Mets vs. Astros

Pete Alonso connected for his 20th home run and drove in his 65th run of the season in the Mets’ 8-2 loss to the Houston Astros. Alonso became the first Met to hit at least 20 first-half homers and drive in 65 or more runs twice in franchise history.

Pete Alonso’s home run was the 126th of his major league career. That broke a tie with Lucas Duda and gave Alonso sole possession of eighth place on the Mets’ all-time home run leaderboard.

Mets vs. Astros

Tommy Hunter made his second appearance of the season and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in the Mets’ 5-3 loss to the Astros. It was Hunter’s sixth game with the Mets and during that span, he had not allowed an earned run while striking out ten. Hunter is one of four Mets pitchers to not allow an earned run while striking out double-digit batters in his first six games with the club, joining: Armando Benítez; Duaner Sánchez; Colin Holderman.

Luis Guillorme recorded two hits batting fifth in the Mets’ loss. At that point, Guillorme had recorded just 158 plate appearances in 49 games and posted a 1.5 bWAR. While writing this piece on Friday, June 24, Guillorme is one of 10 players who have played in fewer than 50 games and posted a bWAR of at least 1.5 this season.

Francisco Lindor went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and 4 RBI in the Mets’ 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins on the road. Lindor connected for his 170th career blast. He became just the sixth different shortstop (min. 60% played at SS) to hit at least 170 homers in his first eight big league seasons. Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken Jr., Nomar Garciaparra, Miguel Tejada, and Álex Rodríguez are the others.

Mets vs. Marlins

Pete Alonso went 2-for-4 with two home runs in the Mets’ 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins. It was Alonso’s 14th career multi-homer performance in his 442nd career game. Only Hall of Fame slugger Ralph Kiner had more multi-home run games in his first 442 big league games (17). Willie Mays, Bob Horner, Todd Helton, and Gary Sánchez also recorded 14 multi-homer games.

Pete Alonso drove in his 68th run of the season, which tied Mike Piazza (2000) for the most RBIs by a Met before July.

Edwin Díaz earned his 16th save of the season. Díaz threw a four-seam fastball to Jesús Sánchez that was clocked at 102.6 mph, which is the fastest pitch Díaz has thrown in his major league career, and the fastest by a Mets pitcher in the Statcast era (since 2015).
