Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

In this weekly feature for MMO, I’m going to look back at the previous week’s games and share some interesting data and information that I’ve collected through various websites such as Baseball-ReferenceFanGraphs, and Baseball Savant. It’ll be a mixture of facts, stats, and analytics.

Let’s get into the seven days between August 21 and August 27.

Mets vs. Phillies

Nate Fisher made his major league debut in the Mets’ 10-9 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Fisher tossed three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. He’s the second Mets pitcher in franchise history to make his major league debut out of the pen while allowing no more than one hit over 3+ scoreless innings, and the first since Dennis Musgraves in 1965 (July 9).

Mark Canha went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI. Both of Canha’s homers came in the seventh inning or later and either tied the game or put the Mets ahead. Canha became the first Met with multiple game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the seventh inning or later of a game since Curtis Granderson on September 17, 2016.

Rockies vs. Mets

Pete Alonso hit his 31st home run of the season in the Mets’ 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in the first game of a four-game series. It was Alonso’s 137th career home run playing in his fourth big league season. He tied Joe DiMaggio for the fifth-most homers in a player’s first four seasons. Ralph Kiner is the leader with 168.

Jacob deGrom tossed six innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts in his fifth start of the 2022 season. It was deGrom’s 108th career start of allowing no more than one earned run. That broke a tie with Dwight Gooden and gave deGrom sole possession of the third-most starts of no more than one earned run allowed in Mets history. Tom Seaver (152) and Jerry Koosman (114) are ahead.

In five starts, Jacob deGrom has thrown 50 pitches that were clocked at 100+ mph. That’s the third-most pitches thrown 100+ mph by a starting pitcher this season.

This was Jacob deGrom’s 36th consecutive start that he allowed three or fewer earned runs. Since the ER became official in both leagues in 1913, only two starters have recorded a longer such streak (excluding openers): Jim Scott (39 games); Ray Washburn (38 games).

Starling Marte stole his 18th base of the season and the 314th of his major league career. Marte tied Rafael Furcal for the sixth-most stolen bases among Dominican-born players.

Mark Canha went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored in the Mets’ 3-0 win. Over his last nine games, Canha had collected 10 extra-base hits. He’s the first Met with 10+ extra-base hits over a nine-game span since Pete Alonso in 2021 (September 2 to September 9).

Seth Lugo made his 263rd career appearance with his scoreless inning of work in the seventh. Lugo tied Doug Sisk for the 16th-most appearances by a Mets pitcher in franchise history.

Jeff McNeil recorded his 40th hit in August with his sixth-inning single. McNeil is in a 3-way tie for the seventh-most hits in the month of August in club history. John Olerud has the most with 45 in August 1998.

Coming into Sunday’s game, Jeff McNeil’s second-half wRC+ was 173. That’s the third-highest wRC+ among qualified National League hitters.

Adam Ottavino recorded his second save of the season with his scoreless ninth inning. In 52 appearances this season, Ottavino’s ERA is 2.09. That’s the fifth-lowest ERA by a Mets pitcher in their first 52 appearances with the club in a single season.
