Jose Quintana and the bullpen combined to blow a five-run lead as the Mets fell 7-6 to the Oakland A’s in a rubber game Thursday at Citi Field. New York (62-59) has lost five of their last six.

Quintana wormed out of bases-loaded jams in the first and third innings but couldn’t do it in the fourth. With the bases juiced, JJ Bleday blasted his 15th homer of the season, bringing Oakland within one, 5-4.

The Mets had built the lead with a Mark Vientos two-run homer and a Luis Torrens two-run single in a four-run third inning. Vientos homered again, his 19th, in the fourth to give New York a 6-4 lead.

The A’s (52-70) scored one run in the fifth on a Huascar Brazobán wild pitch and scored twice off Reed Garrett in the sixth. Tyler Nevin drove in a run with a ground out to tie the game at 6, and pinch-hitter Seth Brown singled in a run to give Oakland its first lead, 7-6.

The Mets had their chances to make a comeback but failed to get a timely hit, leaving runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings.

With two on and one out in the seventh, pinch-hitter Francisco Alvarez was called out when he bounced a ball in front of home, and his body made contact with the ball while he was out of the batter’s box. With two outs, Torrens lined out to short to end the inning. The team went 2-for-10 with RISP.

Alvarez had another chance with two outs and two on in the ninth but flew out to center to end the game.

Mets pitchers walked 11 batters, bringing their NL-leading total to 478. The only team that has walked more in the majors is the 29-93 Chicago White Sox.

The game lasted 3 hours, 45 minutes. It was the longest nine-inning game in the pitch clock era. The teams combined to throw 425 pitches.

Stat of the Game

Quintana has allowed 20 homers in 129 innings. He gave up 13 home runs in his two previous seasons, covering 241 1/3 innings.

Player of the Game

Batting second might be the first choice for No. 27 now. Vientos was 2-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs. He was hitting second for the first time this season because Brandon Nimmo was out with a stomach bug. It was the third two-homer game of his career. He has 19 home runs in 262 at-bats.
